High-interest stories give students an up-close look at different people and events from history. These stories are written to engage students in a more immediate way than simple retellings of historical events. These passages help students connect to the material and the people affected by the historical event.

Before reading each passage, students are given a list of 8 vocabulary words integral to the story. Students are encouraged to practice spelling these words and to understand their meanings within the context of the story. They then are asked to create an original sentence that includes one of the words.
