The Varnish Between Worlds
A Novel of the Painted Door
by Liesl Varga
Some doors are painted shut. Others are painted open. And a few, if you lay the varnish thin enough, forget which they were meant to be.
Sable is the finest forger in the Gallery of Wend. Give her an afternoon and a master's hand and she will give you back the master—stroke for stroke, truer than true. She can paint any dead man's sea. She has never once made a sea of her own. What she cannot do is stop hearing the four-note tune that rises out of her whenever her hands are busy and her heart wanders somewhere it shouldn't go: a lullaby no one taught her, in a voice she can no longer hear, belonging to a mother who walked into a painting one day and did not walk out.
In this city, artisans guard their secrets in pigment and lacquer, and the Gallery keeps the oldest rule of all: the oldest works are never sold, never lent, and never, ever opened. Sable learned long ago not to look at the canvas at the dark end of the room, the one whose surface breathes, whose painted door stands a finger's width ajar, leaking a wet green light that smells of rain on hot leaves. She has spent twelve years perfecting the art of looking away.
Then a knock comes at the hour no one knocks, bearing a commission—a door that should not exist. Old debts stir. A worn cake of impossible blue surfaces from behind the gesso. And the membrane between Sable's world and the one on the other side, the realm that remembers her though she has never crossed, grows thinner with every coat she lays.
Atmospheric, lyrical, and quietly unsettling, The Varnish Between Worlds is a novel of craft and longing, of makers and the made, and the perilous magic hidden in the things we shape with our hands. For readers who love portal fantasy steeped in folklore and slow-burning wonder.
