The Long Pound
I was born on the slow water, and I have outlived it.
That March it had no notion of dying. It lay between its banks at first light with the cold coming up off it like breath off a sleeping thing, and the smell of it was the smell of my whole life: weed and tar and coal-dust, the green rot of the towpath, and under all of it that flat mineral cold that is the smell of deep water that never hurries. Punch stood in it to the fetlocks at the drinking-place, and his breath went up off the cut in two ropes of smoke, and Davy stood at his head no taller than the horse's knee, blowing on his fingers and singing the gee-up under his breath the way you sing to a horse you love and are a little afraid will tread on you.
"Hold hard," I called down the boat, low, for the water was glass and a voice carried a mile on it. "He'll not pull till he's drunk."
"He's drunk," Davy said. "He's drunk twice." He was nine and he asked everything twice and answered it twice as well.
"Then walk him on."
The line came up dripping out of the cut, and the Bright Annis took the strain of it through her stem with a small sound like a word, and we were moving. We were always moving. That is the thing the land people never understood about us, who called us dirty and feckless and did not see that a boat is a kind of clock you live inside, and you wind it by walking. The towpath unspooled. The water folded back from the bow in two long quiet wings and closed again behind us with never a mark, and that was the cut for you—she took everything and kept the surface smooth.
I had the tiller. I had had the tiller since I could reach it, and now at fifteen I could lay the great elm beam over with the flat of my hip and feel through it the whole sixty-foot length of her answering, the rudder biting, the loaded hull swinging slow and sweet into the line of the channel. There is no other feeling like it and there never will be again, for the thing that made it is gone. You steer a narrowboat by the small of your back and the soles of your feet. You feel the bottom come up to meet you before ever you see it. The water tells your body what it will not tell your eyes.
Behind me the hatch-slide rattled and Eli came up coughing.
He coughed the way he had come to cough that winter, deep, with a catch at the bottom of it, a wet tearing sound he turned away to hide and could not hide. He spat over the side and looked at the spittle on the water a moment, which I did not like, and then he looked at me and his face shut over it.
"She trims down by the head," he said.
"Coal's shifted forrard. I'll have Davy ease the cloths at Welney."
He grunted. From Eli that was a speech. He stood by me a while with his hands hanging, those great cracked hands with the rope-grooves worn into them, and he watched the water the way I watched it, and neither of us said the thing that sat in the boat with us like a fourth body, which was that the hold under our feet was not full. We carried Coldlow coal for the Saltgate gasworks, and we carried it light—twenty-two ton where she'd swim at twenty-eight—because there had not been twenty-eight ton of cargo to be had at Coldlow for a Number One who would not work for the carrying companies and be paid in their scrip. We owned our boat. That was the whole of our wealth and the whole of our pride, and you cannot eat a deed of ownership, and the toll at Welney would be gauged on the water she drew and not on what we'd earn, and I had heard Eli and Sukey low in the cabin the night before with the figures, and the figures had not come right, and they had stopped talking when the cabin door creaked, which was me.
Sukey was on her knees on the counter scrubbing the brass.
She scrubbed the brass when there was money trouble. There was a deal of brass on the Bright Annis—the brass chimney-band, the brass rings, the horse-brasses Gran had hung in the cabin, the dipper—and Sukey kept it like fire, and the more the trouble the brighter it burned, so that you could read the state of our fortunes in the cabin's gleam the way a sailor reads weather. That morning you could have shaved in the chimney-band. She had her sleeves shoved up over her red forearms and her lips pressed thin, and she rubbed at a ring that had no tarnish on it at all.
"We don't beg," she said, to no one, to the brass. It was a thing she said. "A clean boat asks nothing of nobody."
In the hatches, sat on the cabin step in the one patch of sun, Gran was painting castles.
She had the Buckby can across her knees—the great water-can, the tall one, that we filled at the clean places and that carried the only sweet water we drank—and she had it half-turned to the light and she was laying in a castle on the side of it with the little brush, a castle with a round tower and a red roof and a lake before it with a white swan, the way her mother had painted them, and her mother's mother. Roses she did up the panels and a castle on every door and can. I asked her once why we painted castles, we who would never in our lives sleep a night inside four walls of stone that did not move. She did not stop her brush.
"For somewhere to live," she said, "where the water can't get in."
She was seventy-some and her hand was steady as a moored boat. She hummed while she worked, a hymn with no words left in it, and she watched the cut go by over the rim of the can the way she watched everything, as a tale already told.
That was my family and that was my world, and I would not have traded one cold inch of it for the whole green county sliding by us on the bank. The land people had their houses that stood still and their names written down in their parish books and their children who could read the names. We had the cut. We had the long pound from Coldlow to the summit and the staircase down the other side and Hallow Tunnel black as the inside of a fist between, and we had her, the Bright Annis, sixty foot and seven of beam, lace at the cabin windows the width of your two hands and a fire in a grate no bigger than a loaf, and we owned her, and that was a thing the duke himself could not say of us: that we were beholden to no man for the bed we slept in. We were Number Ones. My father said it the way other men said their prayers.
The first lock of the day was at Hespa Garn's, where the cut stepped up out of the lower valley, and we came up to it on the slack with the gates open before us and the pound above brimming, which was a gift, for a boat hates nothing like to wait below an empty lock and lose her way.
And the Kyte boat took it from us.
They came off the lower arm where the Coldlow branch joined, the Black Sally and her butty behind, Saul Kyte steering and his lad Ezra ahead at the gate, and they came on a slant that cut clean across our water, and Ezra was through the gate and into the chamber before our bow had passed the bridge-hole, and there is a law on the cut older than any company's by-law, which is that the boat that comes first to the lock works the lock, and we had come first.
"Hey!" I had the tiller hard over to save our stem from the Black Sally's swim. "Hey, that's our water!"
Saul Kyte looked at me across the closing gap. He was a square grey man with a face like a bollard, and his look went past me to Eli at the hatch, and he smiled with no warmth in it at all.
"First in's first up," he said. "Always was."
"We come first to the bridge and you know it."
"Do I." He let the Black Sally swing into the chamber and Ezra threw his weight on the gate-beam to shut us out. Ezra was my own age and he would not meet my eye, which I marked, for boys met my eye and were sorry for it. "Tell your father," Saul Kyte said, easy, "to keep clear of honest boats. Bad luck rubs off." He drew breath, and he said it: "Tace luck."
I did not know then what he meant. I knew only that it landed like a thrown stone, that Eli behind me went still in a way I felt down my spine, and that Davy had stopped singing on the path. Tace luck. As though there were a curse stitched into our very name that the whole cut knew and I did not. I had my windlass up off the cabin-top in my fist before I knew I'd reached for it—the iron lock-key, the L of it warm where it had hung by the fire, the squared eye of it that fits the spindle and turns the whole weight of the water—and I had it up like a thing you would break a man's head with, and I would have.
"Wren." Eli's voice, flat. One word. Hold hard, it meant, without the words.
So I held hard.
I will tell you what I did instead, because it is the thing I am proudest of out of that whole bad day. I swallowed it. I put the windlass down. And when the Kytes had bullied through and dropped the chamber and gone on up, smug as cats, I worked that lock so clean it might have been done by the water itself. I had Davy hold Punch off, and I set the Bright Annis into the chamber so soft she never kissed a wall, and I ran the windlass to the top paddles—the squared eye dropping onto the spindle sweet as a key in a lock it knows—and I wound her up against the press of the water with my whole body laid into the swing, and I let her in slow, no rush, no churn that would throw the boat about, the way the careless do, but a steady rising that lifted us up the green slime of the walls without a jar, until the top gate floated free and I leaned it open with my back and we stepped up onto the higher pound as smooth as stepping over a sill.
Hespa Garn stood at her cottage door in her man's coat and watched the whole of it and said nothing, but she nodded once at me, and she was not a woman who nodded.
And Eli, when I came back along the gunwale wet to the elbow, looked at the lock and looked at me, and he said, "She'll do."
Then he said the other thing. "You'll take the next alone."
I have had men tell me, since, that they loved me, and meant it, and it did not warm me the way those four words warmed me on that cold morning—you'll take the next alone—because they meant the windlass was mine now, the lock was mine, the trade was mine to carry. He was giving me the cut.
We came out onto the long pound above Garn's with the sun finally over the hill, and that was when I saw the new thing.
They marched along the valley-side above the towpath, a line of them, going off toward the summit straight as a struck rule where nothing on the cut goes straight—pegs. Stakes driven into the turf, and on the head of each a slash of red, red as a robin, red as blood on a clean cloth, a whole line of red marching up my green valley toward the tunnel and the tarn. And among them stood men in good coats with their backs to us, three of them about a tall brass instrument on three legs that threw the sun, and one swinging a long chain through the grass, hand over hand, measuring, measuring, and one with a board making marks.
I did not know what it was. I knew in my body that it was against us, the way you know a strange boat coming up on you is trouble before you can say why—by the set of it, by the hands. I read those backs and I did not like them.
The one with the chain straightened and turned, and he was young, near my own age, lean, with a chainman's leather over his shoulder, and across the width of the water and the towpath and all the green going-down between us, he looked at me.
He met my eye. He did not look away and he was not sorry, but he was not laughing either. He looked at me the way I had looked at the Kyte boy, marking. Then he raised his hand—not a wave, just a lifting of it off the chain, a small thing—and I, God help me, near lifted mine back before I caught it.
That was Jonah Cobb, though I did not know his name for a fortnight, nor what the red pegs were, nor that the chain in his hand was measuring my whole world for its grave.
"Don't gawp," Sukey said from the brass. "Land business."
I opened my mouth to say it didn't look like land business, it looked like it was walking straight up our valley—and the boat fell out from under me.
That is the only way I can say it. The water went. I felt it through my feet first, the bottom rising, the steady hold of the pound turning loose and sick, the Bright Annis dropping under us inch by inch as though a great hand had pulled a plug from the cut, and then the long shudder as her flat bottom came down onto the mud and she stopped, dead, fast aground in the middle of a pound that ten breaths before had been brim-full. Punch felt the line go slack and stopped. Gran's brush lifted off the can. The whole boat sat down in the falling water and the green banks rose up around us streaming and naked, and below, where the lower paddle of the next lock should have stood shut and tight, I could see the white tongue of water roaring out through it into the chamber below.
A paddle drawn. A paddle we had not drawn, that no boat ahead had cause to draw, hauled wide open to let the whole pound run out beneath us.
Eli came up the boat fast for a sick man. He stood by me and looked down the long emptying water at that open paddle, and his face did a thing I had not seen it do—it went grey, greyer than the coughing made it, and old.
"Careless," he said. "Some fool left a paddle up." But he said it to the water, not to me, and his hands were shut at his sides.
I was not sure. I have spent a long life being not sure of things, and being right to be, and that was the first of them. I looked from the white roar of the wrongly-drawn paddle, up the green sweating bank where the cut had let us down, to the line of the valley above—and there, nearest the towpath, driven into the turf at the very edge of our world, stood the first of the red pegs, hammered in to the head, square and bright and final as a nail.
Welney Gauge
We came down to Welney two days after the pound let us down, and I have hated the place ever since the way you hate a man who has smiled at you while emptying your pockets.
It was the gauging dock that did it. They had a stone chamber there, cut off the main basin by a pair of gates, and a boat went into it the way a beast goes into the crush at market—willing enough at first, not knowing yet what it was for. The dawn was the colour of dishwater. Frost on the coping. Eli took the Bright Annis in slow under the chain-bridge, and I stood at the stern beside him with my hands cold on the tiller-iron and counted the studs going under as she settled. Four down the larboard side, four down the starboard, little brass eyes let into her black hull that I had polished myself with brick-dust and spit until they shone. They had gauged her new, before I was born, sunk her by stages with iron weights and written down in a book how deep she sat empty and how deep she sat full, so that ever after a clerk had only to read the water at the studs and he would know to the hundredweight what she carried.
He would know. We would not. That was the whole of it, and that was the trap, though I was fifteen and could not yet have told you so in words.
The clerk came out as the gates closed behind us. Skell. I had seen him before, the way you see weather coming, but never close. A soft man, neat as a sermon, in a grey coat brushed to the nap, and he carried his ledger against his chest the way Gran carried the family Bible she could not read either—as a thing of power, held. He had a face that gave you nothing. He smiled when he saw us. That was the worst of him, that he smiled, and meant by it only that he had us where he wanted us.
"Coldlow coal," Eli said. Not a question. He stood square in his blacks with his cap off, because the bank likes a man's cap off, and his coal-rotted chest worked slow under the wool. "Best house coal. Forty ton, give or take a sack."
"We'll see what the water says, Tace." Skell took up the gauging rod, brass-shod, marked in inches, and went down the gunwale on the chamber's edge with the small careful steps of a man who has never once fallen in. He dropped the rod at the fore stud. Read it. Wrote. Dropped it at the next. The boat hung dead still on her chains, sunk to her work, and the dry inches of her freeboard were what he read—the bare black band between water and gunwale, narrower the more she carried.
"Three and three-quarters," he said, to himself, to the book.
"Hold hard." It was out of me before I could swallow it. "She's four full at the fore. I scrubbed that line this morning. I know where she swims."
He did not look up. "Girl," he said, gently, the way you might say dog, and turned the page in his ledger and ran one clean finger down a column of figures I could no more read than fly. Numbers. Just shapes to me then, black insects walking in rows. He found the line he wanted. His lips moved. He wrote a sum under it, and another under that, the way they do, carrying the trade up out of one figure into a larger one where we could not follow.
"Two pound, eleven and four," he said, and closed the book on his finger, and tapped the cover twice with a knuckle, soft, like a man knocking at a door he already owns.
I saw Eli's hands. I had learned to read people by their hands before ever I knew there were letters, and Eli's hands on his cap-brim went white at the knuckle and still. He knew the coal. He knew what it would fetch at Saltgate within a shilling. He knew the toll the Annis had paid down this cut his whole life and his father's life. And he knew this was more—more by enough that the load would carry us down for nothing, that we would have legged a tunnel and worked a summit and a stair of locks to hand the profit across a dock to a man in a brushed coat. He knew it the way you know a bank is going to breach before it goes. And he could not say so, because the proof of it was in the book, and the book was shut, and the figures in it were Skell's own country where Eli could not so much as ask the road.
"That's high," Eli said. Quiet. It was all he had.
"That's the gauge." Skell did look up then, and the smile came back, mild as milk. "You're welcome to dispute the figure. There's a form." He let that sit. A form. Paper, to a man who signed his name with a cross. "Or you can pay it and be on your water. The Company's not in the business of arguing with"—the smallest pause, choosing—"its carriers."
I would have gone for him. I am not ashamed to set that down now, an old woman with the cut filled in and grass grown over half of it: I would have put my windlass through the crown of his hat. Eli's hand came down on my shoulder, the weight of it, no, and I held. I counted. Three down to the basin, then the long pound, then the Stair—I counted the locks home under my breath the way I always have when the wanting to hit something gets too big to hold, and by the time I had got us down to Saltgate in my head the worst of it had passed off me like a squall.
Eli paid. He paid in coin out of the leather purse Sukey kept sewn into the cabin, counting it onto Skell's clean palm coin by coin, and Skell wrote us our ticket, and I stood there and looked at the ledger shut under his arm and thought: it is all in there. Everything they do to us is in there, in a hand I cannot read, and they know I cannot, and that is why they can do it.

While the gates filled to lift us out, I looked across the basin, and I saw what was coming for us, and it was bigger than Skell.
They were building it on the far side, beyond the lime-sheds. An embankment, raw and red, a long ramp of new-turned earth marching down the valley with barrows running on planks along the top of it like ants on a branch. Beyond, the bones of a bridge—two stone piers already up out of the cut's own water and the timber centring slung between them for the arch that would close over it. Navvies everywhere, more men than I had ever seen in one place, and the noise of them came across the water all wrong, iron on iron, a clamour with no horse in it and no slow turn of work, only haste, only the world being hurried.
The Vendt Valley and Saltgate Railway. I had heard it named at every lock for a year, the way you hear of a sickness in the next parish. Here it was, in the flesh, eating our valley a barrow-load at a time.
And by the half-built bridge stood a man in a black coat, with two men bent attending him, and the whole works seemed to lean toward him the way iron filings lean to a lodestone.
"That's him," said the lock-lad working our gates, a Welney boy with a runny nose, glad of an audience. "That's Mr. Carrow."
"Carrow as owns the wharf?"
"Carrow as owns the lot." The boy said it with relish, the way the small love the great. "Welney Wharf, the gauge, the lime. And the railway—he's the head of it, the promoter, they say, put up the money and got the Act through Parliament. My dad says he'll have the whole valley before he's done." He leaned on his beam. "My dad says the Company's let the banks go a-purpose. Won't mend 'em. There's three breaches up the summit end not touched since Michaelmas. Why'd they mend a thing they mean to be rid of? Let the trade rot, my dad says, let the boats give it up, and Mr. Carrow'll buy the cut for the price of an old dog when it's worth nothing—and lay his iron road down the bed of it." He grinned, pleased to have frightened me, not knowing he had told me the shape of my whole life. "Cheaper'n digging fresh, ain't it."
I looked at the black coat across the water. He never looked at me. Why would he? I was a smut on his cut, one of forty thousand tons of nuisance he meant to be shut of. I did not know then—how could I—that I was looking at my own grandfather, that the cold in him had reached out sixteen years before and pulled a sluice in the dark and drowned my mother, that the same hand starving these banks had drowned her. I knew only that a man stood there who meant the water under my feet to die, and meant to make money of the dying, and that he was respectable, and we were not, and the world would take his word over ours in everything for ever.
The cut was going to die. The boy had said it plainly, the way only the young and the cruel say true things. Not the weather. Not bad seasons. A man, on purpose, for money. Mr. Carrow will buy the lot when it's worth nothing. I have heard sentences pronounced in courts of law since then. I never heard a deathwarrant read plainer than that lock-lad read ours, picking his nose on the beam.

We lay up at the wharf two hours to take on a part-load, and that was where the day put its boot in last.
There had been salt promised us. A clerk had told Eli at Coldlow there'd be salt off Welney for Saltgate, and salt is good clean cargo, no dust, fair toll, and Eli had counted it. We tied at the wharf-side and waited our turn, and our turn went by us. A fly-boat came down—one of the fast ones, day-and-night boats with relays of horses and the right of way over everything—the Swift, painted up gaudy, and she took the salt while we watched. They load a fly-boat first. They always will. The carrier with the contract and the relayed horses eats, and the Number One with his one horse and his pride waits, and goes hungry on principle. The wharf-man spread his hands at Eli. Orders. Whose orders he did not say, but I could guess the coat they came in.
I went up to the wharf cottages to fill the Buckby can at the good pump there, because the basin water was foul with lime, and a woman came to her door before I reached it. A wharf-wife, decent, in a clean apron, with a child on her hip. She looked at me—at my boots, my short skirts kilted up for the locks, the brick-dust under my nails, the boat-shine on me that no scrubbing takes off—and she came down off her step quick, between me and her pump.
"Go on," she said. "Go on, now. We've none for you here." And then, to the child, but loud, meant for me: "Don't touch, my lamb. That's boat dirt, that is."
Boat dirt. I had been called it before. I have been called it since. But I was fifteen and the toll still burned in me and the salt had gone to the fly-boat, and I stood there with the empty can in my hand and could not for a moment make my feet move, and the woman folded her arms over her clean child and waited me out as you'd wait out a dog at the dustbin.
I went. I will tell you I went with my chin up and my eyes dry, and that is true, and it is also true that I have remembered her apron for sixty years, and the way she said lamb.
The road back to the basin went past the parish church. St. Wenna's, square-towered, with its yard of leaning stones, and I slowed by the lych-gate without meaning to, the way you do at a thing you have no part in. Land people are christened in there, and married, and buried, and written down—every one of them in a book, a name, a date, all set down to be kept. We are not. We are born in a cabin no wider than a bed is long, and we go in the water as often as not, and no register has our names. I did not have words for the envy of it then. I only stood at the gate.
There was a man in the porch out of the wind, a young one, with a board on his knee, copying. I knew the coat for railway by the chain coiled at his feet and the red-and-white staves stacked against the wall—a chainman, one of the iron's own. Jonah Cobb, though I had not his name yet. He had a quiet face and ink on his fingers, and he was copying a map—a great sheet pinned to his board, all lines and figures, the cut drawn on it thin as a thread and crossed and crossed again with the new straight ruled road.
He looked up and saw me looking. I waited for it—go on, boat dirt—the way you wait for the second drop of rain.
It did not come. "It's the old tithe map," he said, as though I'd asked, as though I were a person who might want to know. "I'm copying off the field bounds. Quill wants every culvert and drain marked where we cross the valley bottom." He turned the board a little toward me, not hiding it, which no bank man had ever done. "There's your cut." He laid an inky finger on the thread of blue. "And there's where we go over her." A straight line, ruled, indifferent, stepping across the water and on.
I hated him. He was the iron in the flesh, the chain and the staves, the very measuring of the water for its grave. And he had spoken to me plain, like a tongue I knew, where the woman with the pump and the man with the ledger had not, and I noticed it the way you notice the one sound footing in a rotten lock-gate, against your will, before you have decided to trust it.
"You're drawing how to kill her," I said.
"I'm drawing what's there." He said it without heat. Then, after a moment, looking at me steadier: "It's not the same thing. But I take your meaning."
I should have walked on. The Annis was waiting and there was light to lose. But the whole day was sitting in me like a stone—the gauge, and the shut book, and the salt, and the apron—and it came out of me hard and low, more to myself than to him, more to the cut than to anyone.
"He read off figures I couldn't see," I said. "He could've said any number in that book and I'd have to pay it. We all would. They've got us by what we can't read." My hands had made fists. I made them open. "I'll learn his figures if it kills me. Every one of them. I'll learn to read that book."
The chainman had stopped his copying. He sat with his pen lifted off the page, the ink drying on the nib, and he looked at me a long moment in the church porch with the wind going by, and what he said he said quietly, the way you offer a hand to someone on the wrong side of a gate, not sure they'll take it.
"I could teach you."
