A Dead Man's Name

The fever had left him looking surprised. That was the cruelty of it. Three days dead and Tom still wore the small frown he put on over a sum that would not come right, as though death were only a column he had added twice and could not make agree. I drew my thumb across his eyelids and closed them, and the ink under my nail left a faint grey smudge on the lid, and I had not the water to spare to wash it off, so I left my mark on my brother and called it a blessing.

We had been one egg split in two. People in Trevenna said it without kindness, the way they said anything about my father's house: the engraver Ashe and his two black-haired chicks, and one of them sexed wrong. I was the elder by the length of a creed, my mother used to say, before she went under the churchyard yew and took her saying with her. The elder by a creed, and the better hand, though no one would write that down anywhere a man might read it.

I sat on the floor of the loft with his head in my lap and the rushlight going, and I counted. I have always counted when there is nothing else honest to do. Three days he had been dead. One day until the Calenture warped out of the pool on the morning tide and stood away south under the Meridian Company's charter, to chart a coast no Christian had set a fair line upon. Tom's coast. Tom's berth—cartographer's mate, signed and sealed, the indenture papers folded in oilcloth in the breast of the coat that hung on the door like a second, emptier brother. And here below us, somewhere down on the quay in the wet, my father's creditor Mr. Hale was waiting on the same tide for a different cargo, which was me. Hale had buried two wives and wanted a young one to engrave his linen and warm his feet, and he held my father's debt the way a man holds a dog's lead, lightly, smiling, knowing the slack was his to take in whenever he pleased.

So. Tom in the ground, the work in the ground with him, and me hung up over a creditor's bed like a side of salt meat. That was the chart of my life as it was drawn that night, and I have never in my work suffered a chart to stand that I knew to be false.

I have very little to leave you of him, only this: my brother was kind, and tired, and afraid of the sea. He had got the berth because our father begged it of Mr. Pleydell the surveyor over the matter of an old plate, and Tom had taken it the way a man takes a sentence, because there was nothing else and the debt was real. He could draw a clean line if you stood over him. He could not, to save his soul, see a coast in his head before the lead brought it up. I could. I do not say it to praise myself; it is only a true measure, and a surveyor who flatters his own soundings drowns honest men. I had set the lines on half the charts that went out of that loft under other men's names—my father's name when his eyes failed, Mr. Pleydell's name for the coin of it—and I had learned to take my whole pay in the secret knowing of it, which buys nothing and feeds no one.

I looked at the coat on the door a long time.

My father's dividers lay where he had left them when his heart stopped over the bench in March, the brass gone the colour of dark honey from the oil of his fingers and mine. Dividers are an honest tool. They do not care whose hand spreads them. You set the points to the scale, you walk them down the meridian, and the distance is the distance whether a king holds them or a hangman or a girl. I took them up and I spread them to a span I knew without measuring, the span of my own decision, and I felt the old steady cold of the brass come into my hand, and the counting in my head went quiet.

I am not a brave woman. I want that written down plain, because what came after has been told in alehouses as if I leapt to it like a hero in a chapbook. I did not leap. I reasoned it the way you reason a passage with the wind foul and the night coming: not is this safe, for nothing was, but which danger can I sound, and which is all black water. Hale's bed I could sound to the bottom and the bottom was rot. The sea I did not know. But the sea had Tom's coast in it, blank and waiting, and the one thing I had ever loved and never been let to own.

A chart is a promise, my father used to say, leaning his ruined eyes close to the copper while I cut the line he could no longer cut. A chart is a promise a sailor stakes his life on, Maren, so you will set no line you cannot stand behind in the dark. He said it to me, the daughter, the one who could not sign. He never once heard the joke in that. I do not think he meant it for a joke. I think he meant it the way men mean things they will let a woman do but not be named for.

I made the promise to myself in his words and got up off the floor.

It is quick to tell and was not quick to do. I took the engraving shears, the heavy ones we used to trim the plates, and I cut my hair off at the jaw by feel, in handfuls, the way you'd dress a hide, and I did not look in the glass while I did it because the glass was my mother's and I could not bear her in it. The hair I burned in the brazier a little at a time so the smell would not carry. Then I stripped off my bodice and my shift, and from the sailmaker's offcuts my father bought cheap for wrapping plates I tore a length of the soft worn linen, the foul-weather stuff, and I bound my chest flat, around and around, snug as you'd serve a rope against chafe, and tied it off under my arm where my own fingers could reach the knot. It is not a thing of one wrapping. You learn the tension of it—too slack and you are a girl badly disguised, too tight and you cannot haul on a brace or take a breath to sing out, and a cartographer's mate who cannot draw breath in a blow is a dead one. I wrapped it three times before it sat right and my ribs had a kind of hard truth to them, like a hull planked over.

Then I put on my brother.

His shirt smelt of him under the fever-sour, of the cheap tobacco he chewed and never told our father. His breeches I rolled at the waist and his stockings I doubled. The coat last. It was a good coat, the one extravagance of the berth, dark blue wool with horn buttons, made too big in the shoulder so he might grow to it, and now I would have to grow to it instead. In the breast pocket: the indenture, the protection paper, a folded letter from Pleydell, a stub of red chalk, and a list in Tom's own hand of the few things a man takes to sea. I sat at the bench under the rushlight and I read his hand until I could make it. It was a poor hand, my brother's, cramped and leaned the wrong way, and I had spent my life making the fair copies of his school exercises so our father would not despair of him. I could counterfeit it in my sleep. That is the bitter comedy of my whole life, that the first forgery I ever practised and the last were both my brother's clumsy honest letters, and the only true thing I have ever signed I signed at the end of the world.

I learned him by heart that night the way you learn a coast you must run in fog. The way he said aye and not yes. The way he sat with his knees apart and his hands hung between them. His silences, chiefly. Tom had been a silent man because he was frightened, and I would be a silent man because silence is a country with no language to give you away. I practised the lowering of my voice not to a growl, which any fool hears through, but to the flat short speech of a tired youth who would rather not, aye, no, by your leave, she'll do. I practised until the rushlight guttered and the rain on the loft slates changed its note, which is how I knew the wind had backed into the south and the morning tide was coming for the ship whether I was on it or under Hale's roof.

I wrapped the dividers in a square of chamois and put them in the coat over my heart, where the binding was, so the one true tool I owned lay against the one true thing about me, and both of them hidden.

I went down before light, in the dead grey hour the fishermen call the false dawn, when there is light enough to walk by and not enough to be known by. I left my brother laid out clean with two pennies on his eyes that I could ill spare and a coin's worth of guilt for every step I took away from him that I will carry to my own laying-out. The town was all shut shutters and the gutters running. I went up the cliff path instead of straight along the quay, the long way, because I was a coward about the short way past Hale's door, and that is how I came to stand once more above the Whaleback, where the rocks go out under the sea like the spine of a drowned thing.

I knew that place. Every child of Trevenna knew it the way they knew the catechism, by being made to. I had stood there at six years old with my hand in my father's fist while below us, on the worst night of a worst winter, men of our own town hung a lantern on a pole and walked it slow along the cliff at the height and pace of a ship's stern light, so that a vessel standing in off the dark would take the false light for a friend riding safe at anchor in the lee, and steer for it, and find the Whaleback with her keel. A false light to make a true wreck. My father had cursed them in a voice I had never heard him use, low and shaking, holding me too hard, those are not men, Maren, those are the rocks themselves got up to walk, and below us in the dark the breakers had taken the sound away and given back something that was not the sea. He was an honest pilot. He had rowed out next morning among the casks and the boards and the things that had been people, and he never went up that path again that I knew of, and he forbade me it, and here I was upon it in his coat that was my brother's coat, going down to a ship.

I stood a moment and let the place say its piece. The false light and the true. The whole of my trade is in the difference between them—a mark you trust your life to, set by a hand you cannot see, that means either come, it is deep here or come, and die. I had spent my life making the marks. I had never once, in my own name, answered for whether they were the one kind or the other. Down on the black water the Calenture lay to her moorings with a single lantern at her taffrail, swinging, true, an honest light, and I went down the cliff toward it and did not let myself think the word light again.

The quay smelled of tar and fish-gut and the green weed the tide turns over. A clerk had set up at a barrel head by the gangway with a horn lantern and a great ledger and a face like a man who has been roused too early all his life. Men were going up the plank in twos with their ditty bags, half of them still drunk, and none of them looked at me, which I had not dared hope for and took like a draught of clean water. I gave the clerk Tom's papers. He held them to the horn light and turned them, and the rain spotted them, and I waited with my heart going against the linen and the brass cold over it, counting the swing of the taffrail lantern—one, two—the way I would learn to count the swing of a lead.

"Ashe," he said. "Cartographer's mate. You're the engraver's lad." Not a question. The whole coast knew my father's trade if not his children's faces.

"Aye," I said. Tom's flat aye. "Tom Ashe."

He looked at me then, but only the look a tired man gives the next item on a list, and what he saw was a thin dark youth in too big a coat with a poor man's bag and his hair badly cut, which is what every other boy on that plank was, and he wrote me into the book. I watched the pen do it, upside down, the way I read everything, in a fair round secretary hand far better than my brother's ever was: Ashe, T. A comma and a single letter where a whole life had been. He had given Tom back to the world in three strokes and a stop, and given me a place to stand inside the borrowed name, and I have never seen a line drawn that I have hated and needed in such equal measure.

"Get aboard, then," he said, and was already reaching past me for the next man's paper.

A hand came down off the gangway, hard and rope-burned, and took me by the wrist, and hauled, and I went up the wet plank into the smell of the ship—bilge and old hemp and the southern weather coming. I did not look back at Cornwall. I had read it all my life and there was nothing on it now I could trust, and a surveyor does not waste a sounding on water already charted. I went up into the dark hull with my brother's name on me and my father's dividers over my heart, and behind me the clerk's pen went on writing other men into the book that did not, any of them, know they were sailing to the edge of the world to be lied to, and that the lie would be in my hand.

The Articles

The rain came down the harbour mouth in long grey skeins, and Bosun Crebb read the Articles into it as though God Himself were standing off the larboard cathead, taking minutes.

Fifty-eight of us held the waist in two ragged ranks while he walked the line with the paper laid flat against the weather and called our names off the ship's book one at a time, so each man could answer for himself. Dunmore. Storr. Pleydell. Lun. He gave every name its small weight and let it drop. The Articles themselves he read in a flat market-cryer's bellow—what the Crown and the Meridian Company were owed of our labour, and what was forbidden us on pain of stoppage and the cat and the rope. Desertion. Mutiny. Theft. The striking of an officer. The concealment of disease. Sleeping on the watch. He read the punishments the way a man reads a thing he stopped hearing years ago.

I stood and let the rain run off my hat brim and counted. Fifty-eight souls. Two boats on the booms. Eighty feet of tired deal underfoot that had carried Riga timber before it carried us, and still gave up its old smell of pine and pitch and the bilge under everything, sweet and foul at once, like a wound dressed in honey. I counted because counting is the work my hands do when the rest of me would shake, and I did not mean to shake. Somewhere down the line my name was coming. Not mine. His.

"Ashe," Crebb said.

"Here." The word came out of Tom's throat—the throat I had drilled before the glass at Trevenna until the pitch of it stopped frightening me, low and a little broken, a boy's voice with the boy gone out of it. The linen across my chest was already wet through and pulling, and I breathed against it shallow, the way I had taught myself, from the top of the lungs only.

Crebb looked at me. He had a way of looking that began at your boots and climbed, taking inventory, and at the top of it he found whatever he had decided to find before he started. "Cartographer's mate," he announced—to the rain, to the company, to me. "Mr. Pleydell's lad." He let the word sit. Lad. "We'll see can he keep his breakfast."

A few in the line laughed, that easy gun-deck laugh of men glad it is not them. I held my eyes on the paper in his fist and gave him nothing back. By my reckoning, a man who needs you to flinch will go on fishing till you do. The only counter is to be dull water.

When the punishments were spent, the captain spoke.

Silas Roke had stood the whole reading by the mainmast bitts with his hat off in the wet, which no other officer aboard would have done, and the bareness of his grey head in the rain made the men watch him the way you watch a man do a thing you yourself would not dare. He did not raise his voice, and so we all leaned the half-inch needed to hear him, and he knew we would.

"You have heard what the law asks of you," he said. "I will tell you what I ask, which is less, and harder. I ask of every man a true account of his work. The sea keeps a true account of us, gentlemen—to the last fathom and the last farthing, whether we keep one of her or no. I would rather we kept ours willing." He turned his hand palm-up to the sky, as though to weigh the rain. "She is patient. She is not merciful. Do not mistake the one for the other."

He put his hat back on. That was all. But the men stood straighter after it than they had through any line of the cat, and I understood already that here was the more dangerous kind of master—the kind you wish to please.

Behind him, under the break of the quarterdeck where the wet did not reach, stood the gentleman.

I had been told of him on the quay and had not believed it—a Company passenger, on a survey. He was a slight, neat man of perhaps five-and-forty in a plain dark coat too good for plainness, and he watched the reading of the Articles the way a careful buyer watches a horse trot, without heat, marking the legs. Mr. Severin Athol, supercargo. He held a leather case under his arm, flat, the size of folded papers, and his hand lay over the buckle of it the whole while, easy and constant, the way a man rests his hand on a thing he has decided no one else will open.

Beside him the surveyor—my master—dabbed at his nose with a handkerchief and looked cold. Mr. Pleydell was sixty if a day, florid, got up in a wig that the rain was spoiling, and he gazed out over the harbour as though composing the cartouche of a chart not yet drawn: Surveyed in the Year of Our Lord 1709 by Order of, &c. His own name large in it, I did not doubt. He had not yet glanced at me once, his mate, which suited me to the keel.

The work began before the speeches had dried off us, and the work saved me.

They warped the Calenture out on the tide that afternoon, hauling her by the kedge while the boats ran the lines, and there was no man aboard with leisure to study another. I went where Dunmore put me. Master Jory Dunmore ran the navigation as a smith runs a forge—wholly, with his sleeves up and no talk wasted—and he had a sailing master's gift of seeing a green hand's worth in the first hour. He set me to the traverse board by the binnacle while the leadsman called the depths off the bow, and watched sidelong to see would I make a fool of it.

I did not. The board was an old friend in a strange coat: the compass rose pricked round with peg-holes, the lines of knots below for the speed. As the helmsman called the heading and the log was hove, I set the pegs—the course we made each half-hour, the rate of it—reading the ship's track off the board the way I had read my father's draughts at six years old, upside down across his bench, before I could properly read words. By my reckoning we were making three knots and a little, north of west, set somewhat to leeward by the flood.

Dunmore came and stood at my shoulder, smelling of tar and cold pipe.

"Tell it me," he said.

I told him. The heading, the rate, the leeway I judged by the wake's slant against the log-line. He grunted, which from Dunmore I would later learn was the better part of a fortnight's praise.

"Pleydell's lad reads a board," he said, not to me. "There's a wonder." And then, to me, lower: "Keep the foul sheets in your own fist and clean. The fair chart's his to spoil. The rough is the ship's life." He tapped the soundings book under my arm, the one I would keep, the true rough record in my own hand. "She'll do."

I would have followed the man into fire for that. She'll do. He did not know how near the bone he had cut with the word.

The body is a traitor that travels with you, and on the second day, off the Lizard with the ground swell coming in long and grey, mine turned its coat.

The sickness took me at the rail in the forenoon and would not be reasoned with. I gave the sea my breakfast and a good deal of my dignity, and the worst of it was not the heaving but the cold sweat after, and the linen gone slack and twisted with the labour of it, and a dozen men within arm's reach who would think nothing of clapping a green hand on the back to steady him. I made myself small against the channel of the chains and was sick quietly, and when Mathy Lun—the ship's boy, all elbows and appetite, twelve years old and orphaned off the Trevenna quays—brought me a dipper of small beer unasked and said, "Ye keep yer feet, that's half of it, my dad said, afore he—" and stopped, and started again, "afore. Ye keep yer feet," I took the dipper and kept my feet and was grateful to him past the saying of it.

The head was the worse trial. There is no privacy in the beakhead of a small ship, only the open gratings out over the bow with the sea breaking white below and a man's mates at his elbow, and I had reckoned on it from the first and dreaded it still. I learned the watches the way a poacher learns a keeper's rounds—the slack quarter-hour at the turn of the watch when the deck thinned, the trick of the loose-hung coat and the turned shoulder, the discipline of drinking little. I had been a woman wearing a dead man's name for nine days. I would, I saw, be learning the trade of it every hour I lived.

And there was Crebb.

He came on me in the waist that evening, when I had braced into a coil of cable to be out of the wind, and he stood over me a moment too long, and then his hand came down on my shoulder and stayed there—not a blow, worse than a blow, a slow and friendly weight, the thumb working a little at the seam of Tom's coat.

"Poorly, boy?" he said. "Soft hands. Engraver's brat. You'll harden or you'll go over the side, one." The hand stayed. The thumb moved. I counted—one, two—and on three I stood up under the hand so it fell off me of its own, and I picked up the cable's end and began to flake it down along the deck as though he were the wind and not a man, busy and blind. "Aye," I said, to the cable. "Harden, then." He sniffed and watched me work a while, hunting the flinch, and at the last he spat over the side and went, having found nothing to keep.

My father's brass dividers were in the breast of the coat, against the bound place, and I had felt the points of them press as the bosun leaned. The hand that holds them, my father used to say, with the rum in him and the fondness, is the hand that makes the chart, whoever signs his name beneath. I had laughed at him for it once. I did not laugh now. I went below and was sick a second time, of nothing, and slept two hours in my clothes among strangers, my fist round the dividers.

On the third day, fairly to sea now and the land a smudge astern, Roke had the company called and read us our commission.

It was honest enough on its face, and grand. We were to run south and west under charter to the Meridian Company and chart a coast no Englishman's hand had set down true—a fog-drowned shore long rumoured and never fixed—and, beyond it, to seek and sound a sheltered deep passage said to cut the southern run by half: a strait through, where men had only ever gone round. Pleydell preened at chart and fix as if the words were his. The men liked half the run well enough; it sounded like shorter voyages and longer lives, which to a foremast hand is the only profit that signifies.

I stood at the back with the soundings book under my arm and felt two notes go wrong, the way you feel a chord struck a half-tone off though you could not name the string.

The first was the gentleman. A survey is a poor, plain, government sort of business—lead and line, vellum and patience, and not a shilling's worth of cargo aboard but salt meat and ink. What does a survey want with a supercargo? A supercargo is for goods, for the buying and selling of them; and there was no goods. Yet here stood Mr. Severin Athol at the captain's right hand with his flat leather case and his hand on the buckle, and when Roke spoke of the Company's particular instructions, his glance went to Athol, and Athol's did not move at all, which is its own kind of answer. Sealed orders. By my reckoning a clean survey does not sail under a sealed hand.

The second was Roke himself. He spoke of the southern coast—the unmapped one, the blank, the place no chart yet held—as a man speaks of a road he has walked. Where the coast trends away to the sou'west, he said, you will find the water deepens sudden off the third headland—and caught himself, and gave it back to us as rumour, or so the old Dutch loose-sheets would have it. But he had said will, not may. He had said the third headland, who had counted them. You do not count the headlands of a coast no one has drawn.

I marked both, and showed nothing, and wrote nothing—not in the foul sheets, not anywhere a hand might find—and went back to my pegs and my pricking, and was the dullest water in the King's service.

I should have slept. Instead, late, with the watch changed and the ship gone to her night-noises—the working of her timbers, the long sigh of the sea down her side, a man somewhere coughing in his hammock—I went up for air I told myself I needed and found I had stopped, in the dark by the after-hatch, because there was light below the cabin door and voices behind it pitched low.

Athol's first, soft and even, a man reading a sum he is pleased with. Then Roke, lower still, and then both together—and then the captain laughed.

I had not heard Roke laugh. It was a warm sound, unguarded, the laugh of a man among friends with the day's mask off, and under it came the dry whisper of a chart being turned on the table, the particular slither of good vellum that I would know in my grave. A chart. They had a chart spread between them, and they laughed over it the way two men laugh over a letter that has gone exactly to plan.

I had been three days aboard and seen every fair sheet in Pleydell's chest and every foul one I myself had drawn. I had seen no such chart as that.

The dividers lay cold against the bound place over my heart. I stood in the dark and counted, slow, and did not breathe deep, and went below before the light could find me—down to the strangers and the dark and the small twisted dread of the linen—carrying the one true line I had so far set down on that voyage, which was a question, and which I had drawn in no book but my own skull, where as yet no man could sign his name beneath it.
