Pip the Bravest Snail
The Littlest Hero in the Whole Garden
by Posy Underhill
Everybody in the garden knows one thing for certain: snails can't be brave. Pip is about to prove them all wrong.
Pip is the smallest, slowest snail in the whole green garden. His shell is the size of a very small pea, chipped right where it curls, and it takes him all morning just to cross a single cabbage leaf. He can't run. He can't fly. He can't do much of anything in a hurry. But because Pip goes so slowly, he notices what everyone else rushes right past — the dewdrop balanced like a tiny glass ball, the ladybird counting her own spots, and the sweetest hidden leaves under the gooseberry bush. As his wise old Gran likes to say, the slow ones see the most.
Then a great storm floods the garden overnight, turning it into a wide and shining puddle-sea. When morning comes, a tiny wren chick is stranded all alone on a cold grey stone, its wings too wet to fly, with the water creeping higher and higher. Its mama is calling from the top of towering Mount Flowerpot — but she's looking the wrong way, and she cannot see.
Somebody has to cross the water and fetch help. But the grasshopper won't go. The ants are too busy. One by one, everyone says no. Everyone but Pip.
So off he sets on a wobbly leaf-boat, humming his slow little song, leaving a trail of silver that shines in the morning sun. There's a rocking sea to cross, a mountain to climb, and grumpy old Grumble the beetle blocking the only path — and not very much time at all.
Warm, funny, and gently thrilling, this shiver-and-giggle read-aloud adventure is perfect for bedtime, story time, and brave little hearts everywhere. It shows little ones a beautiful truth: that being small and slow and careful can be its very own kind of brave.
Scroll up and meet Pip today.
