The Shortest Day

The shortest day in Porthgowan doesn't so much dawn as concede — a grudging grey slackening of the dark that gives up around half past eight and is packing to leave again by four. My first winter home, I learned to love the oven the way you love a lit window: because it was the only thing in the village that stayed warm all the way through.

Everything else had gone to iron. The harbour was stripped for the season — the little fleet hauled up the slip and cradled in its winter timbers, hulls lashed and shrouded in blue tarpaulin gone chalky with salt, and the empty water between the walls the colour of a knife that's been left out in the rain. At the ebb the tide didn't so much go out as pull, sucking cold up through the black mud so you could feel it come off the quay stones and into the soles of your boots and up the backs of your knees. The gulls had stopped bothering. The bunting from the summer festival — the summer I don't talk about, the summer that taught me what I was — had been down for months, and the granite of the front had gone from grey to the wet-black of a whale's back, waiting for the year to break the rest of the way.

Inside the bakehouse it was another country. I had the cloam oven up since before six, and by the middle of that dead afternoon it was singing to itself: the low, contented roar a clome takes on when the fire's right through the clay and the walls are giving the heat back as fast as the wood puts it in. I could read it without looking. I can read any fire, the way another woman reads a face — I spent a decade learning it in kitchens that would have burned me down first if they could, and it is the one thing I carried out of London that I'm glad of. You learn a fire by draught and by colour and by smell. You learn that ash and gorse burn hot and quick and dirty and are gone before you've turned round; that a good split of seasoned oak will hold a low even bed for hours and ask nothing of you; that resinous stuff spits and stains and lines the flue with a black lacquer that catches like a fuse if you let it build. You learn to hear the draw. A clean flue pulls with a soft steady breath, and you feel it at the mouth of the oven as a little cool tug against your wrist; a bad one sulks, and lets the smoke stand about the room like a man who won't leave a party, and tells you before your eyes do that something up the chimney is wrong.

That afternoon the draw was perfect. The flame off the last load had gone from yellow to that pale straw colour, almost lilac at the tips, that means the wood's spent its wet and its wickedness and is burning as pure as it's going to, and I raked the embers to the sides and swept the floor with the wet besom and the steam went up in a great fragrant ghost of oak and hot stone. Half a year in, and I'd stopped counting the days. That was the thing that had crept up on me and frightened me most. I'd come home to bury my grandmother's affairs and sell up and go, and somewhere along the line the going had quietly taken itself off the list, and I hadn't noticed until this cold week, standing in the one warm room in Cornwall, thinking: I am not counting. I don't want to leave. And that was a stranger thought to me than any corpse.

There were three hundred mince pies cooling on the racks, and forty of the big saffron buns, and I still had the puddings to steam, because I had — against every professional instinct and my own better judgement — agreed to feed the whole village.

"You'll do the pies, maid, and the puddings, and a great tray of the little tarts, and we'll none of us hear another word about it," Ivy Bosworth had said in October, in the tone that had ended arguments in Porthgowan for fifty years, and that was that. Ivy was my grandmother's oldest friend and had appointed herself my fairy godmother, and she fed me and remembered everyone and would not be told no. She was there that afternoon with her hands round a mug of my tea, planted on the stool by the proving shelf where the warmth was, watching me work with the frank satisfaction of a woman watching someone else do it right.

"Two hundred," I said. "For the Longest Night."

"More like two-forty, if the weather holds them in." She said it comfortably, as though two hundred and forty people were a small and pleasant thing to conjure a supper for on the year's darkest evening. "The whole of Porthgowan, and the moor farms besides, and Passon Quick will take the service, and Merrick'll read out the names of the storm-dead — the one bit he does do well — and do the rest. Merrick'll do the Merrick of it." Her mouth did something wry and quick and then smoothed itself. "Solstice falls on a Saturday this year, so there's no work to chase folk home in the morning; it'll go on by candlelight till the small hours. It's the loveliest night of the year, my handsome. You've not seen it. You'll not forget it."

"Tell me the pie again." I'd heard it twice, but I liked to watch her tell it.

"The stargazy." She set the mug down. "A great pie, so big it takes two to carry, and the whole of it filled with pilchards — sardines, you'd say — and the crust laid over, and then the little fish set in through the top with their heads up, all round the edge, gazing up out of the pastry at the stars." She lifted her chin, and for a moment she was the pie, and I could see them: the fish faces breaking up through the crust to look at the sky. "It's for Tom Bawcock, or a Tom like him — there's a dozen villages'll tell you he was theirs. A hard winter, and the boats couldn't get out for the storms, week on week, and the whole village starving with the sea full of fish right there under the gale and no man fool enough to go for it. And one old fellow took his boat out on the worst night of all, the longest night, into a sea that had already drowned braver men than him, and he came back at dawn with the boat so full it near swamped, and they made one great pie of everything he brought and every soul in the village ate." She paused. "That's the story they tell."

"And the other story?"

She looked at me. Ivy has washed-blue eyes that miss nothing and forgive most of it. "The other story is that some years the man doesn't come back," she said. "And they light the lanterns for him all the same. That's what the Longest Night truly is, maid, under the pie and the singing. It's the night we count our storm-dead. Every family in Porthgowan that ever gave a man to the sea, and there's not one that hasn't — we make a lantern apiece, and Merrick reads the names out in the chapel, all the way back as far as the plaque goes, and we set the lanterns in the windows of St Gowan's so the dark can see we haven't forgot them." She turned the mug round in her hands. "It's a candle held up in the face of the longest black there is. That's the whole of it. We tell ourselves the light comes back after tonight, and we make ourselves believe it by lighting our own."

Outside the window the grey had already begun its early surrender. It wasn't four o'clock. Someone went by on the front with a hurricane lamp swinging, bent into the wind, and the little gold of it slid across the wet cobbles and was gone.

"There's names on that plaque go back to the eighteen-hundreds," Ivy said, half to herself, "and names on it younger than you." And something passed over her that she didn't explain and I didn't ask about, and then Barnacle came in through the cat-flap like a sack of ginger bricks and demanded the fire and the moment closed over.

I steamed the puddings. I made a start on the great pie crusts, because the fish and the assembly would happen up at the chapel in the morning, with the whole committee getting in the way of it, but the pastry I could do here where I could trust the heat. And all the while the wind was getting up.

You could hear it change through the afternoon. It had been a steady westerly, wet and warm and Cornish, the kind that has come three thousand miles off the Atlantic and arrives exhausted. But somewhere after three it backed round into the east, and an easterly is a different animal entirely — it comes off the land and off the cold heart of the continent, dry and mean and cutting, and it does not arrive exhausted. It arrives hungry. By the time I banked the oven for the night and pulled my coat on to go up and settle the pie plates with Ivy, the wind had teeth in it, and the first hard little grains were coming sideways down the lane — not soft flakes, but something between sleet and grit, ticking against the window glass like sand thrown at it.

Sam Trerise was down at the slip when I came out, doing the thing I'd learned he did before every blow, which was to go round his boat and the lifeboat both and the cradles and the ground-tackle and satisfy himself, personally, one lashing at a time, that the sea was not going to get anything of his in the night. He had a head-torch on and the beam of it swung as he moved, catching the sleet in slantwise streaks.

"You're never baking in this," he said, straightening up, and the torch found me and dipped politely away from my eyes.

"Somebody's got to feed the storm-dead's relatives," I said. "How's it look?"

"Filthy." He said it with a kind of relish, the way men who love the sea say the worst of it. "Petroc's up and down the harbour like a hen. He's had the outer boats doubled up." He nodded east, out past the harbour mouth, where the sky over Gullrock had gone a colour I'd never seen over Porthgowan — not the ordinary bruise of bad weather but something darker and more solid, a purple-black wall standing up out of the sea with a hard grey underlip to it, and moving. "That's snow, that is. On an easterly. We don't get it above once in ten years, but when we do—" He blew out through his teeth. "The moor road goes first. There's a cutting up by Carn Vellan fills in an hour and then nobody's coming over till the plough gets through, and the plough won't come for a village of two hundred souls, not before it's done the A-road and Bodmin and half of Devon."

He had oil on his hands and salt in his beard and he was, I noticed — I kept noticing, that was the trouble — entirely at ease in the middle of a rising gale, planted on the wet slip like the granite went all the way up through his boots. Half a year of small kindnesses had made us into something the village had a word for and I didn't. He'd mended my back door when it swelled in the autumn wet. I'd sent bread up to the boathouse on the cold mornings. Neither of us had said anything, because saying it would have been like naming a fire out loud when you're not sure it's caught, and I had learned the hard way that the surest way to lose a thing is to grab at it before it's ready.

"So we'd be cut off," I said.

"For a day. Two, maybe." He shrugged, and pulled the last lashing through and made it fast with a jerk. "It's happened before. You get a lot of babies born nine months after, my mother used to say." And then, hearing himself, he looked at the boat very hard, and I looked at the harbour very hard, and the wind covered for both of us.

Up in the churchtown lane it was full dark and the flurry was thickening, and there — of course, where else — was Merrick Roscarrock.

I'd seen him a dozen times and spoken to him twice and I still hadn't quite got the measure of him, and standing in the lane that night I understood why: he didn't let you. He was a tall old man, seventy near enough, with a great head of white hair he wore a shade too long and a good tweed coat and a voice pitched to carry the length of a nave, and he was standing in the middle of the churchtown directing the raising of a canvas awning over the chapel steps by the light of two lanterns and the goodwill of four younger men who were doing all the actual lifting. "No, no — Denzil, the other guy, man, the other — that's it, that's it, well done, well done." He praised them the way you praise a dog, warmly and from above. "We'll want it snug for the ladies. Ah — Robyn Meade, our baker!" He turned the full weather-front of his attention on me, and it was genuinely warm, that was the thing; there was nothing cold in it at all. "The pies are in hand? The puddings? Two hundred, we said. It wouldn't do to run short on the Longest Night, of all nights — the village remembers, you know." He said the village remembers the way another man might say I remember, and I filed it without quite knowing why.

"They're in hand, Mr Roscarrock."

"Merrick, Merrick, we're none of us strangers." He patted my arm. Behind him a slight fierce dark-haired woman with a clipboard and a set to her jaw — Ysella somebody, the one who I'd gathered actually ran the Trust — said something low about the lantern box and the vestry key, and Merrick answered without turning round, "Yes, yes, it's all in hand, my dear, leave it with me, leave it all with me," in a tone that closed her mouth, and went on beaming at me. He knew every grave in the yard, Ivy had told me, and every deed and every marriage and every quarrel back four generations, and he kept the whole of the village's memory in the big house on Church Hill and in his own grand white head, and the village loved him for it. Keeper of the record. I could see the love plainly; the whole lane bent toward him like grass. And I could see, too, the small cold thing under it that I'd have spotted in any head chef in any kitchen in the world — that he liked, more than anything, more than the chapel or the memory or the ladies being snug, to be obeyed.

I helped Ivy stack the pie plates, and drank another tea I didn't want, and went home through a lane already going white in the corners.

I couldn't settle. The oven ticked as it cooled and Barnacle occupied the warm hearthstone like a landlord, and I sat at the front window with the shutter open a crack to watch the snow come, and I got out Loveday's book.

My grandmother had kept it under the loose board in the shop, and it was written in a cipher — her own, a careful running hand that made perfect sense to look at and no sense at all to read — and I had been at it, on and off, since the autumn. I'd cracked one knot of it in October, one substitution, enough to know it was real, enough to make it worse. There was a brass key tucked in the spine that fit nothing I'd found — not the shop, not the flat, not any lock in the house. And there was a phrase near the back, in the loosed cipher, that I could half-read now and couldn't hold: it broke apart under me every time, like a word you know in a dream. A boat. A winter. The winter you come in on — or came — the tense wouldn't sit still. And a name that turned into GRACE, and then wouldn't turn into anything else, and the year, when I forced it, came out something impossible and old.

The snow was laying now, quick and quiet, blotting the harbour lights one by one. I put my finger on the phrase and the winter dark seemed to lean in over my shoulder and read it with me, and want it, and I thought: not tonight. I put the book away. Some knots you have to leave to loosen themselves.

When I went to bank the last of the fire and check the flue was clear for morning — habit; you never leave a warm flue you haven't listened to — I looked out and the front was gone, all of it, the quay and the boats and the black water, all under a moving grey curtain, and up the hill a single small light burned in a window of St Gowan's where someone was making ready.

I met Sam once more at the top of the slip, going up to his; we neither of us said why we were both still out.

"Big blow coming," Sam said, squinting east at a sky the colour of a bruise, and pulled the last lashing tight on the boat. "If it snows on top of it, the moor road'll shut and we'll be on our own up here for a day or three." He said it the way you'd mention the tide — a fact, not a fear. "Just as well," he added, almost to himself, "the whole village'll be under one roof for the Longest Night." Neither of us knew yet what a terrible thing that would turn out to be.

The Keeper of the Story

There is a kind of man who owns a place the way a landlord owns a house he's never fixed a tap in, and Merrick Roscarrock owned Porthgowan's past like that. He hadn't laid a stone of St Gowan's or written a word of its records that mattered — but by God he'd stand in front of both and take the applause.

I knew the type before I ever met him. You learn it in kitchens. The head chef who wanders to the pass, sets one leaf of chervil on a plate somebody else has built for eleven hours, and lets the room believe the whole thing came off his hands. I'd cooked under three of them and I could smell it now from the bottom of the churchtown lane, where I'd left the van because the cobbles are too steep and too greasy in December for anything with wheels, and was hauling six stargazy pies up on the sack-trolley with my breath going out ahead of me in rags.

Peggy caught me outside the stores. She had the door propped on a sack of grit and a queue of nobody, which for the day before the Longest Night meant she was fishing.

"Robyn Meade taking pies to church," she said, delighted. "Your gran'd have a thing to say." She peered under the cloths. "You've done the little faces looking up. Good maid. Merrick likes them looking up. Says it's traditional." She lowered her voice to the register she keeps for things the whole street should hear. "He's up there now, ordering everyone about. Poor Ysella. Poor Treeve, more like, and him only buried his mother back in September." She crossed herself, a Methodist doing it for luck rather than theology. "You mind yourself with Merrick. He's charm to your face and a ledger behind it."

"I'm bringing pies, Peggy, not marrying him."

"Well," she said, as if that settled nothing, and let me go.

St Gowan's sits at the top where the lane runs out of houses and into churchyard, a squat granite thing with a tower too heavy for it, hunched against the weather like a man who's stood in it all his life. Inside it was colder than out. That's the trick of old stone — it keeps the winter it soaked up in November and hands it back to you in July. The nave smelled of damp hassocks and paraffin and the green breath of moss finding a way through the north wall, and the light came through the plain glass the colour of dishwater. Somebody had been in with the yew and the ivy; there were lanterns waiting in ranks along the pews, two hundred of them, paper and tin and glass, made by two hundred pairs of hands.

"Mind the third flag from the font, it rocks," said Hester Quick, coming out of the vestry passage with a box of candle-ends and a jumper that had given up on the collar. Our vicar looks like somebody's clever aunt and swears like the harbourmaster, and I'd liked her from the first Sunday I didn't go to. "Kitchen's through the back, but you'll want the run of the place first or you'll be lost carrying custard in the dark. Come on. Merrick will want to show you himself and take an hour doing it, so let me do it in five."

She walked me up the north aisle, and that was where I first saw them: the names.

A brass plaque, black-edged, kept polished when nothing else in the chapel was — you could see the difference, the way the metal shone against the tarnish of the memorials around it. THE STORM-DEAD OF PORTHGOWAN, it read across the top, and under it two columns of names and years going back past anything living, the sea's tally kept careful the way this village keeps everything careful that it can't undo. Some of the dates were in twos and threes, whole crews. Near the bottom, newer, the letters still sharp:

KITTO KEAST — 19 — LOST THE LONGEST NIGHT, 2001.

"We read them all out tomorrow," Hester said, following my eye. "Every one. Takes a while. Merrick does it — it's the one bit he genuinely does well, I'll give him that. He's got the voice for it." She touched the brass with two fingers, an old habit, and moved me on before I'd done more than notice the name and think, without any weight to it at all, that Keast was a Porthgowan name and there was a Keast up a ladder somewhere in this chapel with his hands full of mortar. Then it was gone. That's how it works, I've learned since. The whole thing was on the wall in front of me and I walked past it.

The vestry was off the passage behind the organ, and it was the warmest room in the building by a mile, which struck me at the time only as luck.

"Merrick's snug," Hester said, dry. "He keeps the collection in here on feast nights, and the good brandy, and himself. Locks the lot in." She knocked and got no answer and pushed the door, and it was a serious door — old oak, a mortise lock with a key the size of a spoon standing in it, and above that, screwed to the inside, a heavy iron barrel bolt, the kind you'd bar a byre with. I put my hand on it without thinking, the way you test a thing. It shot home smooth and heavy under my thumb, oiled, used.

"Belt and braces," I said.

"He had the bolt put on after some business with the roof-fund cash box, years back. Nobody's ever tried the door since, but Merrick likes a locked room he's the only key to." Hester said it lightly and I filed it lightly. "Window's ornamental." It was — a little leaded lancet high in the outer wall, the lead swollen and the catch painted over, the sort that hasn't opened since the Coronation and wouldn't in a gale if your life hung on it. "So it's stuffy. And it's got the only decent fire in the place, when the wretched thing draws."

The fire was set in the great chimney breast that took up the whole inner wall — a broad tongue of stone and old brick pushing out into the room, far bigger than the little cast-iron stove let into the middle of it seemed to want, so that the stove looked like a small dark eye in a large blank face. Half of that face was hung with the mason's sheeting, milky plastic taped to battens, and behind it I could hear somebody working, the scrape and tap of a trowel finding its rhythm.

"He's making a good job of it, mind," Hester said, nodding at the sheeting. "Better than we deserve. Treeve! Visitor. The baker."

The sheeting lifted and a man came out from behind it on his knees, then stood, unfolding, wiping his hands down his front and making them no cleaner — they were black to the wrist, soot and lime-mortar dried grey in the creases, the hands of somebody who'd been living inside a chimney for weeks. He was fortyish, broad and quiet, with a stillness to him like a man who's learned there's no point hurrying stone. There were shadows under his eyes that had nothing to do with the soot.

"Miss Meade," he said. "I've had your bread. It's good bread." As if that were a thing worth saying carefully and truly, which, to me, it is.

"Treeve Keast," Hester said. "He's the reason the roof's still on and the reason this chimney might, one glorious day, actually take smoke up instead of into the room."

"It'll draw," Treeve said, to the stove rather than to us, gently, the way you'd gentle a horse. "Give me till spring. There's a lifetime of birds' nests and worse up there." He crouched again and worked the little damper lever in the flue with one blackened finger, and it moved stiff and then free, and he watched it as if it had told him something. "We only burn wood, see, up here. Always have. Chapel's burnt wood since there was a chapel." He tipped his head at the porch, and through the open passage door I could see the woodpile stacked against the porch wall, split ash and larch under a tarp, silvered and dry, a good half-cord of it. "Resin gets in the flue. Furs it up like a kettle. Half my job's scraping the last hundred winters of woodsoot out of that throat so this poor old thing can breathe."

"You'd think," Hester said, "that a chapel that spent forty years with a coke boiler would have a clean flue for its trouble."

"Different flue." Treeve almost smiled; it was the first thing that had eased his face. "Come and see, if you're not squeamish. Merrick keeps meaning to have it filled in and keeps forgetting to pay for it, so it's still there to show."

He drew back the sheeting on the far side, and there was the chimney breast's secret. Set low in the brick, no higher than my knee, a small cast-iron door on a stiff hinge — a hatch the size of a hearthstone, its handle worn to a shine, streaked now where he'd freed it. He hauled it open and the cold breathed out of it, and behind was black: a low walled space running back under the chimney into dark, and in it, catching the torchlight he clicked on, a great sullen heap of grey-black lumps, dull, pocked, dead-looking.

"Old coke," he said. "Boiler-house coke. When they warmed the chapel with the boiler — that'd be up to the sixties, seventies — the coke lived in here, and there's your stoke-hole." He tapped the hatch. "Man'd kneel here of a Sunday, rake the fire, feed it through, work the damper, all without going round the front. They walled the boiler off when they scrapped it and nobody ever cleared the store. Ton of coke, near enough, sat behind that wall since before I was born, and this hatch painted shut on top of it. I only found it a fortnight back, tapping for the void." He shut it again, and the small iron clang of it was oddly final. "Filthy stuff, coke. Burns different to wood — slow, and mean, and near no flame. My father heated a whole quarry-cottage on it and I hated the smell my whole childhood." He said it without any weight at all, dusting his hands, and I filed that lightly too, the way you file anything a craftsman tells you plainly about his craft. I liked him. It was simple as that. He was the realest thing in the building.

"And this," said Treeve, and reached up to a plank laid across the sheeting battens where he kept his flask and his level, "come out the void an' all. Wall of paper behind the boiler wall — old harbour stuff, dockets and logs and God knows. I've been passing it on to Merrick for his archive. He does love a docket." Something crossed his face and left. He picked up a bundle of it, foxed and string-tied, damp-swollen at the corners, and just then Merrick came down the passage as if the word archive had reached out and pulled him.

I'd have known him for the type in a crowd of a thousand. Big, upright, silver, in a good coat that had been good a long time, with a voice that filled the nave without effort and a way of arriving so that the room rearranged itself around him. Behind him, a step back and a foot to the side the way the second-in-command always stands, came a dark-haired woman with a clipboard and a look of someone doing three jobs and being thanked for none.

"Ah — the pies," Merrick said, as though he'd conjured them, and shook my hand in both of his, warm, dry, lingering just past comfortable. "Robyn Meade. Loveday's girl. We are so glad to have the bakehouse back in the right hands. Your grandmother's stargazy — well." He kissed his fingers to the memory of a pie he'd very likely never paid for. "Now. Has anyone shown you the history? Because you cannot cook for the Longest Night without knowing what you cook for." And he was off, one hand on my elbow, steering, and I let him, because you learn more about a man from his tour than from his answers.

He told me the age of the tower (wrong by fifty years, I'd find out) and the legend of the fisherman and the killing storm, and he told it well, I'll grant him, the way Hester said — he had the voice, and the pauses, and he watched my face to see it work. He showed me the plaque and read three of the names off it from memory with his hand on his heart, and never once, standing under it, looked as if a single one of them cost him anything. He walked me to the vestry and called it my little sanctum and rested his palm flat on the great chimney breast — on Treeve's fresh pointing, still soft — as if he'd raised it himself. "We're restoring it properly," he said. "Traditional methods. Lime, not cement. I won't have modern muck in my chapel." My chapel. Treeve, three feet away on his knees, didn't look up from his damper.

Then the woman with the clipboard said, quietly, "Merrick, the grant return has to go tonight or we lose the second tranche, I need you to sign —" and held out a pen, and he took the pen and didn't take the paper.

"Ysella keeps me on my leash," he said to me, smiling, and to her, without the smile, flat as a slammed drawer: "It'll go when I've read it. It goes over my name, Ysella. Everything here goes over my name." A small silence. She put the pen away. He had corrected her the way you correct a commis who's plated without asking — publicly, pleasantly, and to remind the room whose kitchen it was. I watched her jaw set and her eyes go somewhere private and hot, and I thought: she does the work, and he signs the dish. I've been Ysella. I know exactly what it does to your back teeth.

He did it twice more before I got away. Curtis Pengelly put his head in — down from the Gilded Crumb to drop leaflets, all teeth and topknot — and Merrick's warmth iced over. "Ah, Mr Pengelly. Still no on the shopfront, I'm afraid. Aluminium and back-lit signage, in a conservation area. One does have to protect the character of the place." He said character like a man dropping a coin in a slot he owned. Curtis's smile stayed on and everything under it went to war, and he left without the leaflets he'd come to leave. And when Perran Grose came in to practise, tweed and dandruff and forty years of being adored by ten-year-olds, Merrick greeted him with a hand on the shoulder and a murmur too low for the room — but I was near enough — "Lovely to see you, Perran. We must have our little talk before you go. About the — arrangement." And the old organist's face fell off its bones, just for a second, before he pinned it back and went to his stool and played something loud enough to end all conversation.

Merrick took the bundle of harbour papers off Treeve on his way out — "for the archive, yes, good man, I'll go through it, there may be treasures" — tucked it under his arm like something he'd found himself, and went to greet the flower ladies. Treeve watched him go with a level, unreadable face, and then went back into the chimney breast, and I heard the trowel find its rhythm again, tap and scrape, patient as tide.

I got my pies to the cold kitchen, covered them, and went home down the hill glad to be out of that warm little room and into honest weather.

The bakehouse smelled of the day's bread and of the sea coming in under the door. Barnacle had annexed the flagstone in front of the cloam oven, all fifteen pounds of one-eared ginger tom, and cracked his good eye at me to confirm I hadn't brought a rival cat. Kensa was at the bench doing a sulk and a lattice at the same time, and the lattice was — I stopped. It was good. Not nineteen-and-bored good. The strands were even, the tension right, the whole thing breathing where a beginner's chokes. She saw me see it and scowled and dropped a cloth over it. "It's just pastry," she said, which is what people say about the thing they're most afraid to be caught caring about.

My grandmother left me a bakehouse, a debt, and a small stiff diary bound in blue that reads like a shopping list gone mad — flour weights, tide times, initials, a little brass key sewn into the endpaper that fits nothing I own. Half of it's recipes. Half of it isn't. Ivy Bosworth, Gran's oldest friend and my adopted fairy godmother, was in the corner with her knitting and her memory, and between us over an hour we teased one knot loose: the numbers weren't weights, they were both — a baker's measure read against the tide-clock, the ounces telling you where in a line to look and the tide-time telling you the letter. Slow, and mean, and I loved it. It gave up a fragment, four words and a number, in Gran's small hand made smaller by code:

came in — winter boat — '61.

Then the shop bell went and Denzil Nancarrow came in for his loaf, eighty-four and salt to the bone, and I said it aloud without thinking — "the winter boat, Ivy, what's the winter boat" — and Denzil went still by the door the way the sea goes still before it does something.

"Sixty-one," he said. Not asking.

"You know it?"

"I know a winter." He didn't move to the counter. He was looking at the black window and the first hard grains ticking against it, and he was somewhere else. "Blow like the one that's coming. Moor road under, boats in. They ran the packet round from Falmouth when the road shut, them days, if the harbour man'd let it in. The winter boat." He said it the way you say a name you've decided not to say for years.

"Denzil," Ivy said, gentle, warning.

"Sixty-one," he said again, softer, looking at nothing, at a storm twenty-five winters back or sixty-five, I couldn't tell which. "She come in on the winter boat, your gran, and Grace Tregoning took her in, and there's them in this village never forgave it, nor her." He set his loaf under his arm. "Don't go raking cold ashes, maid. Nothing warms up out of them but grief." Which, given the week I was about to have, was the truest thing anyone said to me all winter.
