Windfall
The tide you come home on tells you who you'll be all day, and I had long since stopped fighting it. That October it came home gold — the harbour brimming with low sun, the boats leaning easy in the mud, the whole of Porthgowan smelling of woodsmoke and windfalls — and for once in my life I let myself believe it meant nothing but good.
There's a particular way a Londoner learns to hold her shoulders, and it took the village two full years to unpick mine. I noticed it that afternoon on the coast road, coming down with the last of the flour order roped in the back of the van, the engine off and the handbrake on and nothing to do but look. The hedges had gone to rust and rosehip. Below me the roofs of Porthgowan stacked down the hill to the water like grey loaves cooling on a rack, and the quay beyond them was a different colour than I had ever seen it — not the summer blue of buckets and windbreaks but a heaped, ruddy, cidery orange, crate on crate of apples, and among the crates the black iron beams of the presses, and over the whole of it the thin blue drift of the first proper fires of the year.
I sat there longer than the flour wanted me to. Two years ago I would have been braced. Two years ago every good morning was a bill not yet arrived, every kind word a thing that would be taken back. That afternoon I sat on the hill above my own life and felt, of all the outrageous things, safe. It is not a feeling I recommend. It makes you careless about the tide.
Down on the quay the bakehouse had its door propped and its windows steamed, which is exactly how a bakehouse in late October ought to look. I let myself in through the back, past the sacks and the cool slate shelf, and the smell hit me the way it always did now — not the ghost-smell of the first year, the museum-damp of a place that had stopped, but heat and butter and yeast and, under it, the burnt-honey breath of the cloam oven that I had bullied and blessed and finally learned. It was earning its keep. Kensa had it going since six.
"You're late," Kensa said, without turning round. She had a tray of splits out and was thumbing the tops of them, testing, and her wrists had the confidence in them now that you cannot teach and can only wait for. Two years ago I'd hired a surly girl who thought scales were an insult. What stood at my bench now was a baker. She'd have hit me if I'd said so. "Curtis came for the extra dozen. I gave him fourteen."
"You gave the Gilded Crumb my saffron buns."
"I gave Curtis fourteen buns," she said, "because he's doing our teas Saturday when you'll be up your ears in apple cake, and you'd have given him twenty and thrown in a jar of the good jam, so." She flicked a look at me over her shoulder, quick and dry. "You're welcome."
She wasn't wrong, which was the annoying thing about Kensa now. Two years of forced neighbourliness had turned Curtis Pengelly from a rival I'd have happily seen close down into something I could only call a friend, though neither of us would use the word to the other's face for fear of what it might commit us to. We covered each other's ovens. We lied to each other's difficult customers. Over the weekend ahead we had a whole treaty drawn up — his teas, my cake, a shared account with Peggy for the cream — because the Cider and Smugglers Weekend swallowed a village the way a spring tide swallows the steps, and no one baker survived it alone.
I hung up my coat and got the apron over my head and let the day take me.
The Cider and Smugglers Weekend is the biggest thing Porthgowan does that isn't a funeral. The summer people are gone by then, the season's takings counted, the village briefly and gloriously its own again, and it spends that last freedom throwing itself the sort of party the tourists would ruin if they knew. There is apple pressing on the quay for anyone with arms. There is a truly reckless quantity of scrumpy. There is the WI cake class in St Gowan's hall, which Kensa was running herself this year — running, mark you, not helping at, the teacher not the girl who fetched the eggs — and there is, at the sharp end of it, at dusk on the Saturday, the thing the whole weekend is truly for: the reenactment of the Porthgowan Run.
Every village on this coast will tell you its grandfathers were free-traders. Porthgowan can prove it. There was a night in the 1780s — the parish has the excise court records, or Verity Pascoe says it does, and she's the one paid to know — when the whole village landed a cargo of brandy and tea and God knows what under the very noses of the Riding Officer and his men, timed to the top of the tide, brought up the cliff path off Pentowan Head by a lantern signal, and got clean away with it. Three hundred years, near enough, the village has been dining out on that night. Every October it plays it again: the costumes, the muskets, the mock skirmish on the path, the lanterns, the cargo carried up in the dark while the excise men are led a dance. It is nonsense. It is glorious. It is the one time of the year the place remembers, out loud and in public, exactly who it is.
I was making the apple cake for it. I make it every year now, which is a thing I say lightly and mean like a vow, because a signature bake is the first root a person like me puts down and I had not had one, not really, not that was mine and not borrowed from a dead woman's book, until this one. Cornish apple cake: not the fluffy sponge the recipe cards mean, but a dense, buttery, cider-brown thing, the apples going to jam in the crumb, a top that cracks like a good crème brûlée and gives to a squab of soft fruit beneath. I use the windfalls. That is the whole secret and I'll tell anyone: the bruised ones, the split ones, the ones the shops throw out, because a windfall has had its sugars scared into it by the fall and cooks down sweeter and darker than any fruit you'd pay for. You have to be ready to pick it up, is all. It won't wait. It goes over in a day.
By four the light was doing the thing that only October light does here, coming in low off the water and gilding the wrong sides of things, and I'd twelve cakes cooling and my hands were the particular kind of tired that is a pleasure, and I took the walk up to the orchard because Ivy had said, in that voice, that there'd be windfalls kept back for me if I came before dark and not if I came after.
The community orchard sits in the fold of the hill behind the village, old trees and older, gnarled and lichened and leaning, the grass beneath them soft with fallen fruit and loud with wasps gone slow and stupid on the ferment. The whole place smells of cider before a single apple's pressed — that high, sweet, dizzy reek of windfall rotting into wine on the ground. Jowan Hocking keeps it. He was there when I came through the gate, up a ladder in the far corner with a canvas sheet spread below him, doing the last of a tree by hand, and he lifted a hand to me the way he lifts a hand to everyone, gentle and unhurried, a soft-faced man in an old green coat who had never in my hearing said an unkind word about a living soul.
"Robyn," he said, coming down the ladder careful of his knees. "Ivy's put by two crates of the Tommy Knights for 'ee. The bruised ones, mind, like you asked. I told her you were mazed, wanting the spoiled fruit, and she said you were the only one in the village with the sense to." He said it warmly. He had a way of handing you a compliment as though it were somebody else's. "How's the cake coming?"
"Twelve down. Forty to go."
He whistled. "For love, is it?"
"For four pound a slice on Saturday," I said, "which is nearly the same thing," and he laughed, a low soft laugh, and turned back to steady the canvas.
I liked Jowan. Everyone liked Jowan. That is worth saying plainly, before all the rest of it: that he was the gentlest man in Porthgowan, that the orchard was better for his hands and the weekend was better for his care, and that if you had made me name, that afternoon, the one person in the village who could not have hurt a wasp, I would have named him and thought no more about it. He was tidying the last of the fruit into the crates as I gathered mine, and there was a photograph, I noticed, tucked in the shelter of the little tool-shed by the gate, curled and faded behind cracked glass — a young man on the harbour wall, laughing, sun in his eyes — and when I glanced at it Jowan glanced too, and something crossed his face and was gone, the way a cloud-shadow crosses the orchard and is gone, and he said nothing and I said nothing, because some things you leave a man to.
Ivy Bosworth was down by the press yard with Denzil Nancarrow, the pair of them installed on kitchen chairs someone had carried out, presiding. Ivy had a tartan rug over her knees against the coming chill and the expression of a woman who has personally arranged the entire autumn. Denzil, who is eighty-six and has the face of a cliff that has decided to keep its own counsel, had a mug of something that steamed and smelled of nothing so wholesome as tea.
"There she is," Ivy said, delighted, as though I might have got lost between the gate and the press. "Robyn, love, you look well. Doesn't she look well, Denzil? She's stopped looking like she's about to be arrested."
"I never looked like that."
"You looked like that for a year and a half," said Ivy comfortably. "Now sit down and tell me about your Sam."
He is not my Sam, I said, or started to say, in the reflexive way I'd been saying it for a year and had lately stopped believing, and Ivy watched me not finish it with the frank pleasure of a woman collecting a debt. Because he was. That was the other thing about that autumn, the thing I hardly dared hold up to the light for fear of dropping it. Sam Trerise, coxswain of the lifeboat, boatbuilder by the slip, the slowest and surest man I have ever known — Sam was mine, carefully, quietly, at last, after two years of the pair of us circling the thing like two cats deciding whether to share a hearth. It had happened without a single dramatic moment, which is how I knew it was real. It had happened the way bread happens: you leave the right things together in the warm and one day it has risen.
"He's teaching me the tide table," I said, which was true and was also, from the look Ivy and Denzil exchanged, understood to mean a great deal more, "so I'll stop asking him when the harbour's going to fill up."
"When the moon says," said Denzil, which is the only answer any of them will ever give, and drank his not-tea.
It was Denzil who nodded me toward the top of the yard, where the noise was. "Cap'n's here," he said, and there was a dryness in the old man's voice that I filed and did not examine, then. "Been here an hour. You'll not miss him."
You could not have missed Hedley Vercoe from the deck of a passing ship. He was a vast man, and he had arranged to be heard before he could be seen, his voice rolling down over the crates ahead of him — there she is, there's my girl, put her there where the light catches, we want the visitors to see what a real press looks like — and then he came round the stacked crates himself, filling the gap where the light had been, in the greatcoat and the tricorn he wore a week early every year because he could not bear to be Hedley Vercoe when he was allowed to be the Cap'n. Cider magnate. Benefactor. Thirty years the presiding spirit of the weekend, self-crowned captain of the Run, the man whose name is on half the barrels in the county — VERCOE'S CORNISH CIDER, gold on green, and his own broad red face beside it on the good bottles.
He was magnificent with the crowd, I'll give him that. He caught up a knot of visitors who'd wandered up from the quay and had them laughing inside a minute, pressed apples into a child's hands, boomed a welcome at me across the yard — the baker! the famous cake! save me a slice, maid, or I'll have the licence off you — and I smiled and said he could have the first one, and meant it about as much as he meant the offer, which is to say we understood each other exactly. I have met his kind. You meet a great many of his kind in professional kitchens: the man front-of-house whose warmth is a tool he keeps beautifully oiled, who loves a crowd the way a fire loves fuel, and who runs cold the instant the crowd's back is turned.
I saw the switch that afternoon. It's the sort of thing I notice because noticing is the only trade I've ever really had.
His son was there — Ruan, thirty-four like me, thin where his father was broad, carrying a clipboard and the air of a man who has been carrying clipboards for other people his whole life. Hedley turned from charming the visitors and said something to Ruan low and short, and I did not hear the words but I saw the temperature of them, saw Ruan's face shut like a door, saw the older man's hand land on the younger's shoulder heavy as a magistrate's, a gesture that read as fatherly at ten paces and as ownership at two. Then a visitor spoke and Hedley swung back round into the light, warm again, whole again, ha, my son, my right hand, couldn't do a stroke of it without him — and Ruan stood behind the beam of it with his clipboard and his shut face, and no one but me was looking at the son at all.
I gathered my crates. It was none of my business. I was two years into minding my own, and finding, to my surprise, that I could.
I carried the windfalls down to the quay as the sun went, and the whole harbour had gone the colour of the inside of my cake — that deep cider-brown, the light nearly horizontal now, the mud flats gleaming where the tide had left them and the boats standing on their keels in the ooze. The presses were shrouded under tarps for the night. Petroc Angove, the harbourmaster, went past me at a trot with three clipboards of his own and the hunted look of a man who has read the ten-day forecast and does not like it, muttering about crowd numbers and the Saturday tide and whether the quay railings would hold if a thousand people all leaned on them at once to watch a pretend crime. "Big springs this weekend," he threw at me, as though I'd argued. "Big springs and a full moon and the whole world coming to watch. If one of them goes off the edge it's my neck." And he was gone before I could tell him it wouldn't be his neck at all, and had no idea how nearly right and how completely wrong he was.
Sam was down by the slip, where he always is at the end of a working day, a plane in his hand and a curl of oak on his boot, and the sight of him did the thing it had lately started doing, the small warm turn under the ribs I no longer bothered to argue with. He set the plane down when he saw the crates and took them off me without being asked, which is the entire secret of the man, and we stood a minute in the last of the light with the harbour draining out below us and the first bonfire catching somewhere up the hill.
Pinned to the shed by the slip was the tide table for the week, curling at the corners, Sam's own pencil marks on it. He tapped it with a broad thumb, showing me, the way he'd been showing me all autumn, patient as the sea.
"There's your Saturday," he said. "High water ten to six. Which is why they do it then." He traced the cliff path with the pencil, up above the harbour, gold now, catching the very last of the sun while the quay had already gone to shadow. "Old free-traders couldn't work but the top of the tide. Boat comes in loaded, she needs the water under her right up to the rocks, no time to spare, and she needs it dropping again fast to be gone before dawn. So it's all timed to the minute. Lantern goes up on the head when the water's right — that's the signal the coast's clear — and the cargo comes up the path in the dark while the excise men are off chasing the wrong lantern the other way." He said it the way another man might recite a psalm. It was his village and his water and his people's craft, and he loved it without one ounce of the four-pound-a-slice about him. "Run goes up on the tide, same as it ever did," Sam said, tapping the table by the slip, his shoulder warm against mine, the cliff path gold above us. "High water at dusk, lanterns lit, Cap'n Vercoe landing his cargo under the excise men's noses for the three-hundredth year running." He grinned. "Nothing changes here, maid."
I remember thinking that was the loveliest thing anyone had ever said to me.
I was wrong about that, too.
The Bitter Kernel
"Never grind the pips," I told Kensa, the way my grandmother had told me, coring apples at the same scarred table. "A pip won't hurt you. A cupful, ground and steeped, is another matter — that's the bitterness under the sweet. It's in almonds, apricot stones, the lot. It's why ratafia smells of danger." Kensa rolled her eyes and kept coring. I have thought about that morning more times than I can count.
We had a bushel and a half of Jowan's apples between us and the whole weekend to feed, and the kitchen smelled the way I had spent two years teaching it to smell — woodsmoke off the cloam oven, butter going soft, the green sap-and-honey reek of a hundred apples opened at once. Rain had come in the night and gone again, and the light off the harbour was doing that thing it only does in late October, coming in low and amber under the grey, so that the flour on the table looked gilded and the whole room seemed lit from within, like a window in a church I'd stopped believing in.
"Danger." Kensa said it flat, the way she said most things, and reached for another apple. Two years ago she'd have said it to wound. Now she said it to be teased, which is a different thing, and we both knew it. She was twenty-one and better with pastry than I'd been at twenty-five, and I would rather have eaten the muslin than tell her so before she'd stopped needing me to.
"Danger," I agreed. I split an apple, thumbed the core out clean, laid it in the bowl. "Amygdalin. It's a real word, you can look it up. Apple pips carry a little of it, apricot kernels more, bitter almonds most of all. Your body turns it into cyanide — a smidge, from a smidge. Eat a pip by accident and nothing happens; your gran ate a thousand of them over a lifetime and it's Denzil who'll bury her." That got the corner of Kensa's mouth. "But crush them. Grind a whole cup of kernels, steep them, cook them down, and you've made yourself something that isn't flavour any more."
"So why's it in the ratafia, then. If it's poison."
"Because a little is the loveliest thing in the world." I fetched down the bottle from the high shelf, the ratafia I'd put up in July, ruby-dark, and pulled the stopper and passed it under her nose before she could duck. "Go on."
She sniffed, suspicious. Then her eyebrows went up despite her. "That's marzipan. That's — Christmas."
"That's the kernel. That's the bitter almond, in a dose that only flatters." I stoppered it and set it back. "The whole trick of a kitchen, Kensa, is that the line between the thing that makes people close their eyes with pleasure and the thing that kills them is how much, and who's holding the spoon. Marzipan, ratafia, a proper Bakewell — all of them are a wink at something that would happen to you for real if the cook were careless or cruel." I heard my grandmother in it as I said it, word for word, the exact phrasing she'd used to me at this table when I was nine and thought poison was a thing in storybooks. It had sounded like storybook lore then. It had sounded like storybook lore this morning, too.
"How much would it take," Kensa said, coring, not really asking, "to actually do someone in."
"Less than you'd think and more than you'd manage by accident." I flicked a pip at her. "Which is the whole point of never grind the pips. Now — the other thing, and this is the part half the world can't do at all." I cored the last of my row and lined the apple halves up like something surrendered. "I can smell it. Bitter almonds. Straight off — marzipan across a room, a drop of ratafia in a trifle, a cracked apricot stone in a jam. Some people can and some people flatly can't; it's in the blood, you've either got the receptor for it or you haven't. My grandmother had it. My father, apparently, did not." I said it lightly, the way you learn to say things about a father who left the village and never explained, and Kensa, who had her own gaps where a parent ought to be, let it pass, which was its own kind of kindness. "So one day someone tells you their almond cake tastes 'off' and you can smell that they've used stones gone rancid, and you look like a witch. That's all it is. A nose."
"A witch's nose," Kensa said.
"A working nose." I slid the first tray of halved apples toward her. "Sugar, then the cinnamon, then thin as you can lay them. We're making forty of these and I want them handsome."
She started laying apple like she'd been born to it, which she nearly had, and I stood a moment with my hands floured and my back to the warm oven and let myself have it — the ordinary morning, the girl who'd once thrown a proving basket at my head now humming under her breath as she worked, the harbour full of apple crates through the glass, the whole warm improbable fact of belonging somewhere. I'd stopped, mostly, bracing for it to be taken away. That morning I didn't brace at all. I have thought about that, too.
The bell over the door went, and the cold came in with the smell of the quay, and Jowan Hocking came in behind it with a crate held against his chest like a man carrying a sleeping child.
"Bakehouse," he said, which was how he said good morning, and set the crate down on the end of the table with a gentleness the apples didn't need. "The last of the good keepers off the old trees at the top. I held these back for you special, maid. Vercoe's lot can have the drops for pressing." He straightened, and rubbed the small of his back, and smiled at us both, and the whole room warmed by a degree that had nothing to do with the oven.
There are people a village decides to love, and Jowan Hocking was Porthgowan's. Fifty-five, spare and weather-browned, with big careful hands and a way of ducking his head when you thanked him as if praise were a low doorway. He'd kept the community orchard thirty years — grafted it, cossetted it, mapped every tree by name and named half of them himself — and he ran the pressing at the weekend, and he mended the churchyard wall for nothing, and every October without fail he made his ratafia and his little apple-kernel cordial in the shed behind the orchard and gave it away in unlabelled bottles to anyone who'd carried something heavy for him that year. There was a bottle of it on my high shelf. I'd never once thought about what was in it. That is exactly the sort of sentence I now cannot write without my stomach turning over.
"They're beautiful, Jowan." I took one out of the crate. It was, too — small, russeted, dense, the kind of apple that tastes of the field it grew in. "What are they?"
"Cornish Gilliflower, that one. Bit of Pig's Nose in behind you." He came round the table and I watched him look at Kensa's work, at the apple laid thin and even, and something moved in his face that I recognised, because it was mine. "That's proper, that is," he told her, quiet. "Your gran'd be some pleased." Kensa went pink and pleased and pretended not to, and I loved him for it, plainly, the way you love the ground you stand on.
"You want a cake out of the first batch," I said. "For the pressing crew."
"I never say no to your cake, maid, you know that." He picked a windfall out of the crate, one that had bruised, and turned it in his fingers, and I saw him find the split in the skin with his thumb the way I'd found the core. "Here's a thing while I mind of it — you'll have the little ones in and out all weekend, wanting to help at the press. Keep 'em off the pips. Every year I say it. They love to bite an apple down to the middle and go crunching on the pips like they're sweeties, and it's nothing, one apple, but I don't like a habit of it." He said it mild as milk, a warden's small yearly worry, and set the bruised apple down. "I tell mine — the trees, I mean, I've no others — I tell the trees off worse than the children."
"No others," I said, lightly, laying apple.
"Never was one for family." He said it without weight, a man remarking on the weather he'd always had. "Kept myself to myself since I was a lad. Suits me. The orchard's company enough, and it never argues, and it does what I tell it." He smiled again, that ducking smile, and I remember thinking that there was something under it the way there is something under a settled pond, and then I thought no such thing, because Ivy Bosworth came in for her morning bun and her morning gossip and the moment folded shut like a book.
Jowan carried the last of the good apples over and handed them to Ivy with both hands so she could see them before he bagged them, and Ivy told him he was a saint and he told her he was a fool, and the two of them went at it happily, and I put the first trays in the oven and thought about none of it. Thirty years of that man's gentleness stood between the village and any other reading of him, thick as a sea wall. I'd have stood behind it myself.
Ivy stayed after Jowan went, the way she does, with her bun and her tea and her elbows on my counter, and because it was the Cider & Smugglers Weekend coming the talk turned, the way the tide turns, whether you're watching it or not.
"Whole village at it," she said comfortably. "Denzil's in a mood already. Says the weekend digs up more than it ought." She dunked. "He's not wrong, mind. All this playing at free-traders. Lanterns up the cliff, the Run, Hedley in his hat. The old ones don't care for it. There's things down that coast the sea took and the sea can keep, is Denzil's view."
I kept my hands in the dough. It's a thing I've learned, to keep working when something touches the buried place, so my face has something else to do. Because the smuggling weekend had done to me exactly what it had done to Denzil, only from the other end — it had lit the thread again. Upstairs in the flat, in the tin under the loose board my grandmother had never told me about and I'd found anyway, were the things I'd spent the better part of two years teasing loose: Loveday's coded book with its recipes that weren't recipes, the little brass key that fit no lock in the house, and the scrap of paper I'd finally understood was half a map — a cache-map, though of what I still didn't know — with its marks I couldn't read and its edge torn away clean. Every autumn since I'd come home I'd taken them out and got no further, and every autumn the getting-no-further hurt a little more, because the woman who could have told me was under the churchyard grass Jowan mended for free.
"What does he mean," I said, casual, "dig up more than it ought."
Ivy's eyes came up over the rim of her cup, and for a second — just a second — the fairy-godmother went somewhere else and there was an old woman there who'd lived through things. "You'd have to ask Denzil that, my love," she said, and dunked again, and it was gone. "And he won't tell you till he's ready. Stubborn as the Head, that man." She pointed her bun at the window, where old Denzil Nancarrow was in fact visible on the quay, upright as a mooring post, glaring at a man unloading cider presses as if the presses had personally wronged him. "But he loved your gran better than anyone left alive. When he's ready, you'll be the one he tells."
I didn't answer that. I couldn't, quite. I put the second batch in and turned the amber morning over in my hands like one of Jowan's apples, feeling for the split.
The bell went again just before noon, and this time it was a stranger, which in Porthgowan in October is an event.
She was perhaps twenty-seven, in a good coat gone slightly wrong at the hem, with the particular alertness of the clever and the particular tiredness of the clever who've been arguing with someone stupid. She had a canvas bag over one shoulder heavy enough to list her, and she looked round my bakehouse — at the loaves, at the beams, at the door frame — with an attention I recognised because it was, again, professional. She was reading the room the way I read a room, only for a different bitterness under a different sweet.
"You're the Meade," she said, and then coloured. "Sorry. Robyn Meade. I'm Verity Pascoe. I'm cataloguing the parish archive — the free-trade papers, the old parish records, the lot — for Mr Vercoe's book." She said Mr Vercoe's book the way you say the name of a tooth that aches. "The Run history. There's a launch and everything." She hitched the bag. "I'm going round the old families. I heard yours might be one of them, and that you'd — that you might have kept things. Recipes, ledgers, day-books. The Tregoning side."
The Tregoning side. Under my own paint, over my own door, TREGONING & DAUGHTER showing through where the low sun found it. My grandmother's name before it was Meade. I stood very still with my floured hands.
"I might," I said. "Sit down. There's tea."
She sat like a woman who'd forgotten she was allowed to, and got out a battered laptop and, from a folder, a photocopy of something old and beautiful in copperplate, and I gave her tea and a bun she didn't notice eating, and she talked. She was good at her work and half in love with it, and it came off her the way the marzipan smell comes off the ratafia — that she'd found something. She'd been all through the eighteenth century, she said. The parish knew things it didn't tell tourists. Real names, real families, who ran what up which path and who took the excise money to look the other way. "It's not a pageant," she said, with heat. "It was a whole economy. It fed people. It hanged people. There are families in this village whose whole — " She stopped herself, glanced at the door, lowered her voice out of a habit she seemed to have caught recently. "Anyway. It's the real thing. That's what I want in the book."
"But," I said, because there was a but on her the size of a house.
Verity Pascoe looked at me, and made a decision, and it was the decision that told me I was going to like her. She reached into her bag and drew out an old ledger — not one of hers, one of the parish's, foxed and soft-cornered — and held it a moment as if weighing whether to.
She opened it flat on the flour-dusted table, careful of the crumbs, and turned it to me. Ink the colour of weak tea, a hand that leaned like a boat in wind. "There," she said, and her finger found a line without hunting for it, a woman who'd read this page till she dreamed it. Tregoning — and a date in the 1780s — and a column of goods that were nobody's lawful business. "Your people. And not shopkeepers, whatever the sign says now. They were in it up to the neck, the Tregonings. Cellar rights, boat shares, a name that turns up every time the excise lost a cargo and never once when they caught one." She looked up at me, bright and careful at once. "Which is a thing I'd put in the book, if it were my book. It's the best of the story. The clever ones. The ones who kept the whole coast fed and never swung for it." Her mouth thinned. "He struck it. First read-through. Blue pencil straight through the Tregonings, and the Trewhellas, and the Hockings, and half the families that actually did the thing, because they don't — " she made quotation marks with two tired fingers " — 'resonate with the visitor experience.' He wants one smuggler, one captain, one grand old name, and it's his. He wants a legend he can charge four pound to look at." She sat back. "I keep turning up who really did it, and he keeps rubbing them out. We had words. We've had words more than once."
I looked at the line under her finger — Tregoning, the name under my name, the family under my paint — and something in the flat under the loose board pulled at me across two floors and thirty-five years, the coded book and the brass key and the torn half-map that had a name to it now, or the beginning of one. Two things had walked into my bakehouse before noon: a stranger's book about a dead trade, and a live thread of my own I'd thought I was chasing alone. They were, I understood without quite letting myself understand it, the same coast. I wanted the ledger the way you want a thing you've been told all your life was lost.
"He only wants the pretty half of it," Verity Pascoe said, tucking the old Tregoning ledger back into her bag, and something in the way she said it made me look up from the dough. "The half that sells." Behind her, through the window, Jowan Hocking was handing Ivy the last of the good apples with both hands, gentle as a churchwarden, and the whole quay loved him, and I thought no more about either of them than you think about the ground you're standing on.
