The Barometer Falls

You can read a Cornish winter off the faces on the quay before ever you look at the glass, and the morning the great storm came down, every face in Porthgowan was doing the same sum: how high, how hard, and whose roof first. Mine, as it turned out.

The barometer in the bakehouse was Gran's — a fat brass drum of a thing with a face like a captain's watch, screwed to the wall by the flour bins where the damp couldn't get it, and in all the years I'd been minding the needle it had never once come off the end of the dial. It had come off it now. It had walked down past Stormy in the small hours and gone on walking, into the little unmarked country past the last word printed, where the manufacturer had plainly decided no sensible person's weather would ever go. I tapped the glass the way Gran used to, out of habit and a kind of superstition, as if a knuckle could argue with the sky. The needle didn't so much as tremble. It had made up its mind days ago.

Outside, Porthgowan was making up its own.

The whole cove was at it by half nine, in the flat brown light that isn't morning and isn't afternoon and belongs to February alone. Down on the quay Petroc Angove, the harbourmaster, went boat to boat in his yellow oilskin with a coil of new warp over his shoulder, bent into the wind that wasn't even properly here yet, only sending its outriders — sharp little gusts that came round the chapel corner and snatched at everything loose. He'd doubled every mooring in the inner harbour and he was doubling them again, because there is a point past which a Porthgowan man stops trusting a rope he tied yesterday. Boats that lived in the water all year were being hauled out beyond the slip on the tractor, one after another, up onto the hard where the sea had no business but might come anyway. Old Denzil Nancarrow stood by the capstan directing it all with a stick and a face like weathered oak, giving orders no one needed and everyone took, because he was eighty-six and had seen more of these than any man breathing and it would have been rude, and possibly unlucky, to ignore him.

And along by the slip, in the doorway of his shed with the half-built hull glowing pale behind him, was Sam.

He had his crew about him — Digory Rowe and Frank Bunt and three of the younger ones — and between them they were carrying the lifeboat's spare gear up out of the boathouse to higher ground: the drysuits, the lines, the great orange bags of it, everything they'd need if the sea called them out and everything they couldn't afford to have swimming if the sea came in first. Sam moved through it the way he always did when it was serious, without hurry and without a wasted word, and the crew moved the way men move around a coxswain they'd follow off the end of the world: quick, and quiet, and glad he was there. He'd not slept properly in two nights. None of them would sleep out of their kit until this thing had come and gone. When a storm like this is on the way the RNLI does not wait to be asked; it simply stops being off duty, all of it, all at once.

I watched him a moment through the streaming window and let myself have the small warm foolishness of it, the way you do, and then I got back to my own weather, which was leaking.

Because here is the thing they don't tell you about coming home and making a go of it: the going is never finished. Two and a half years I'd had the bakehouse now — two and a half years of before-light starts and blistered forearms and the till counted twice, of turning Meade's from a shut-up shrine to Gran into a business that could actually keep a girl and pay a wage. And it had worked. It had. Kensa was a proper co-baker these days, twenty-one and better with laminated dough than I'd been at her age, proud of her hands in a way that did my heart good; Curtis Pengelly, who'd once been my sworn rival across the harbour at the Gilded Crumb, was near enough a friend now and would lend me a bag of strong flour without making me beg for it; Barnacle, the great one-eared ginger tom who belonged to nobody and had elected to belong to me, had installed himself on the warm slate by the cloam oven and ruled it like a pasha. It was a going concern. In the fat months. And February is not a fat month on a Cornish coast; February is the lean bone of the year, when the visitors are a rumour and the takings come off pasties and hot chocolate and whatever I can bake that a frozen village will queue in the sleet to buy.

And into that lean bone, the roof had chosen to fail.

It had been threatening for a twelvemonth — a slate gone here, a soft place in the sarking there, a brown bloom on the storeroom ceiling that grew a little each wet week no matter how I glared at it. I'd had a man look. I'd had the quote. It was the kind of number that empties a room, and I'd done what you do with a number like that in February, which is put a bucket under the drip and promise the roof spring. The roof did not want spring. Up in the loft over the back store the drip had become a trickle in the night, and the trickle had found a friend, and I'd gone up at six with a torch to a smell of wet plaster and the particular soft sag of a ceiling thinking about giving way. And now the worst blow in living memory was three days out and coming for exactly that spot, and I hadn't the money to stop it and hadn't the time and couldn't get a man onto a roof this side of the storm if I offered him the crown jewels.

Money, weather, and home, all three, tied in one knot over my head. I stood in the loft with the torch and the sag and the rain not even started yet, and I thought about my father, who'd left this village and never told anyone why, and about Gran, who'd held this same roof up with grit and secrets for forty years, and I did the only sensible thing a person can do when the sky is falling and the money's gone and the fear starts climbing your throat.

I went down and lit the oven.

There's a logic to it, whatever it looks like. You cannot mend a roof in a gale. You cannot make February pay. But a storm is coming and it will strand the whole village and it will send men out onto a black sea to fetch back people who oughtn't to be on it, and every one of them will come off the water perished and starving and grateful for anything hot — and the one thing in all the world I know how to do, past doubting, is feed people. The cloam oven is the warmest, safest, oldest thing in Porthgowan; Gran always said it had never once gone cold in a storm since the day it was built into the wall, and I believed her, and I meant to keep it that way. So I raked the fire and fed it and let the great clay dome soak up the heat the way it had for a hundred and fifty years, and I got down the big battered tin and started on the winter's own bake, the one this coast has made in bad weather since there were people here mad enough to live on it.

Sennen Curnow gave me the true recipe my first winter home, off a card so old the ink had gone the colour of tea, and made me swear I'd not put it in a book. It is a black cake and an honest one: dark and sticky and heavy, a cake that keeps and keeps, that gets better the longer you leave it, that a man can carry in a pocket down to a wet boat and eat cold at three in the morning with numb fingers and be glad of. Treacle is the whole soul of it — black treacle and molasses in quantity, more than a soft-weather baker would dare, cooked down with butter and dark sugar until the kitchen smells like the inside of a rum barrel; then oats and flour and a great deal of ground ginger and mixed spice, and stem ginger chopped through it, and a splash of something to help it keep that I'll not name here either. Storm-food, from a wrecking coast. There's a grimness folded into the very sweetness of it that suits the place. My people, if Porthgowan was ever quite my people, lured ships onto these rocks once and went down at low water to strip the drowned, and then, I don't doubt, came home and ate a slice of this black cake by the fire and slept sound. The coast has never been sentimental about the sea. It knows exactly what the sea is.

I got the butter and the sugar and the spice down from the shelf. What I hadn't got, in any quantity, was the treacle — and for treacle in Porthgowan there is only one door you knock on.

You go to Praed's.

The Praed cellars stand grandest of all along the harbour front, three storeys of dressed granite where every other frontage is whitewashed cob, and they have been the backbone of the harbour since before anyone can put a date to it — chandlery once, then smokehouse, and now smokehouse-and-heritage-rooms besides, the sort of place that sells you a pound of oak-smoked mackerel and a postcard of itself in the same breath. If you want anything in bulk in this village — flour, salt, oil, and above all the great dark stuff, treacle and molasses by the drum — you buy it off the Praeds, because the Praeds have always had the deep cellars to keep it in, and the deep cellars are the thing.

The Commodore had the door open before I'd got my hand to it. That was Austol Praed all over: he heard weather coming the way other men hear a kettle, and he liked to be found ready.

"Robyn Meade." He said it warmly, as though my turning up were the one good thing in a bad week. Austol was sixty-odd and built like a bollard, silver at the temples, with a seaman's high colour and a handshake that could crack walnuts and never did, because he was careful with it, the way genuinely strong men are careful. Ex-pilot, ex-lifeboat — twenty years on the boat before Sam was ever thought of — and he wore both facts lightly, which is to say he wore them all the time. Half the village called him Grandad without a drop of his blood in them. "Come for your black gold, is it, before the roads go? Sensible girl. Half of them'll be in tomorrow wanting candles and finding the shelves bare, and then they'll say Praed never warned them." He laughed, comfortable as a fire. "Mind the step. She's greasy."

He took me down.

Down is the only way to describe it. The undercroft went below the harbour, older than the granite front by centuries, low-arched and cold, and it had a smell I have never met anywhere else on earth: the deep sweet reek of treacle and molasses gone into the very stone, and under it the oak-smoke breathing down from the smokehouse floors above, and under that, always, the brine — the sea's own breath, coming up through the walls that stood in its water. Treacle, oak-smoke, and brine. Once smelled, never mistaken for anything else. It got into your coat and your hair and came home with you.

"She'll be wet down here by Friday," Austol said, easy, as he wrestled a drum of black treacle out from the racks with those careful arms. He nodded at the far corner, at the flags, at a dark tide-line stain a good foot up the ancient wall. "Always is, a big blow. Not the sea, mind — folk think it's the sea comes in and it never is. It's the leat." He straightened, patting the drum like a good horse. "There's a leat runs under half the harbour, off the moor, and when the moor's full she backs up and comes in here through the floor. Fresh as a spring. Thigh-deep, last time, right where you're standing." He said it with a proprietor's pride, as a man says and the panelling's original — the flood was simply another thing about the cellar that was his to know and mine to marvel at. "Grandfather used to say a Praed's not truly a Praed till he's baled his own cellar in his shirtsleeves at midnight."

He talked, all the while he weighed my treacle out and my molasses beside it — and it was good talk, that was the thing about Austol, you came away warmer and knowing more and never quite noticed he'd been steering. He talked about the storm of '90 and the storm of '76 and how neither would be a patch on the one that was coming; about which crab boat had been foolish where; about the tide, which he read like the back of his own hand. And he talked about the old cove, the real Porthgowan, the wrecking days and the free-trading days and the boat that came ashore in this bay or that, because Austol Praed was the keeper of all that — the man who told the village its own history, at the heritage-room lectern in season and over any counter out of it, and told it so well and so warmly that you'd never think to ask who'd written it, or why the story always seemed to end with a Praed doing the decent thing. He gave me the treacle at a price that wasn't a February price, waved off my thanks, and carried it up the greasy steps himself because the roads would go, he said, and a girl shouldn't be humping drums about with a storm on her.

"Feed my crew, will you," he said at the top, meaning Sam's crew, meaning the boat, which in Austol's mind and half the village's would always be partly his. "There's a good maid. Nothing worse than a cold man on a wet sea." And he stood in his grand doorway with the harbour behind him, master of all of it, and watched me go with the fondness of a man watching his own.

Sam found me on the quay in the first of the real rain.

It came in off the sea in a slant, the first honest rain of it, the outriders done and the thing itself arriving, and the light going by the minute though it was barely gone two. He'd a tide table folded in his oilskin pocket, soft as a handkerchief from handling, and he got it out and we bent over it together in the lee of the harbour wall the way we'd bent over a hundred small shared things, close, without needing to be told to be. Two and a half years, and the old spark hadn't gone out; it had just banked down to something steadier, something that warmed the whole room instead of throwing sparks — married in all but the word, and the word neither of us said.

"Springs," he said, running a wet thumb down the column. "Big ones. New moon Thursday, and this on top of it." He meant the storm surge, the sea heaped up by low pressure and driven by the wind, sitting on top of an already high tide like a fist on a full glass. "She'll not just make her marks. She'll go over them."

"How far over?"

He looked at the harbour, and did the sum a coxswain does without paper. Where the water would reach. What it would take when it got there. I watched him see it — the quay awash, the low doors flooded, the cellars filling — and I thought of Austol's tide-line stain a foot up the wall and knew this one would put it under and never notice.

"She'll top the quay by Thursday's tide," Sam said, tapping the table where the water would come, close enough that I felt the cold coming off his oilskin and the warmth coming off him underneath. "Get your treacle in while you can, maid. After that it's just us and the sea for a week." He didn't say the other thing. Neither did I. The rain came down like a dropped shutter, and Porthgowan went dark at three in the afternoon.

The Wreck at Gullrock

The sea takes and the sea gives back — that is the whole of what a coast teaches you, if you live on one long enough. It had spent three nights taking Porthgowan's slates and boats and sleep. On the third morning it gave us back a wreck, and a set of bones, and a name we'd all agreed sixty years ago to leave under the sand.

But first there was the night, and the night was the worst of it.

By dark on the third day the harbour was not a harbour any more, just a black cauldron with the quay for a rim, and the sea came over the rim in slow, deliberate heaves, each one hanging a beat too long before it dropped, as if the water were thinking about the houses. You could hear it thinking. The whole of Porthgowan under a great animal roar that never stopped and never quite settled into a rhythm you could sleep through, a roar with things inside it — the crack of a chimney pot going, the long tearing sound of somebody's felt roof leaving, the church clock striking eleven with the wind snatching the strokes away so you got three of them and had to guess the rest.

I had a bucket brigade going in the flat over the shop.

Two slates had gone off the bakehouse roof on the first night, and on the second the hole had found the flat's ceiling, and on the third the ceiling gave it up entirely and the storm came in over Gran's old bed in a steady brown rope of water. Kensa had the good bucket. I had the roasting tin and the two stockpots, and we ran them down in relays to the yard where the leat was already brimming, and up again, and the rope of water never thinned, and the plaster round it bellied lower every hour like something about to be born. Barnacle sat on the newel post the whole time with his one ear flat and his tail wrapped tight round his feet and watched us as though we were fools, which we were.

"That's another one for the socials," Kensa said, coming up the stairs backwards with her phone held out in front of her like a lantern, filming the water coming through the ceiling, filming me on my knees with the roasting tin. Twenty-one years old and she'd found the one job the storm couldn't take from her. She'd been filming since Tuesday — the harbour going over the quay, the Angoves' dinghy up on the war memorial, old Peggy's post-office window boarded with a bread board because there wasn't a sheet of ply left in the parish. Three hundred people were watching a girl in a flour-dusted apron narrate the end of the world, and more every hour. "Porthgowan's still here," she told them, tipping the phone up to the ceiling and the rope of water. "Just about. Robyn says the bakehouse has stood two hundred years and it's not going anywhere tonight, so."

I hadn't said that. But it was a good thing to have said, so I let it stand.

Downstairs the cloam oven was the warmest place in the village, and the village knew it. They'd been coming since teatime — the Bosworths, the Rowes, three of the Chynoweth cousins, the vicar with her collar off and her sleeves up, families I fed and families I didn't, all of them huddled on my benches and my flour sacks in the orange dark with their wet coats steaming, holding mugs in both hands. I had a vat of hot chocolate going and a tray of yesterday's buns warming through and a great black slab of wreckers' cake cut into more pieces than it wanted to go, and when I ran short of bread Curtis Pengelly came slithering along the harbour front from the Gilded Crumb with a hessian sack over his head and two dozen of his own loaves under his coat, dry, God knew how.

"Don't," he said, when I opened my mouth. "We're not doing that tonight. Tonight there's one bakery in Porthgowan and it's got two ovens." He set the loaves down and looked at the rope of water coming through my ceiling and the tin under it and did not smirk, which for Curtis was a kind of love. "I'll take the far end," he said. "You've got the crew coming."

Because the crew was out. That was the thing under everything else that night, the thing none of us said in front of the children. The maroons had gone up at nine — you felt them more than heard them, two flat thumps against the breastbone through all that roaring — and Sam and Digory and Frank and the rest had gone down the slip into that and put out to a yacht dragging her anchor off Pentowan Head with two souls aboard who should never have been at sea in February. I'd stood at the shop door with the wind trying to have it off its hinges and watched the boat's blue light go out through the harbour mouth and vanish, and come up on the far side of a wave that shouldn't have let it come up at all, and go again, and I had made myself turn round and cut more cake, because the alternative was to stand there doing sums with the sea.

They came back at half past one. All of them, and the two souls besides, blue-lipped and useless and alive, and the whole shop stood up when the crew came dripping in and nobody cheered because you don't, you just make room, and I put hot chocolate laced with something into Sam's hands and he wrapped them round the mug and round my fingers with it and held on a second longer than the cold accounted for.

"She'll be worse before she's better," he said, low, only to me. Salt in the creases round his eyes. He smelled of diesel and the deep cold outside of things. "Wind's going to back nor'west by morning. When she backs—" He stopped. Coxswains don't finish sentences like that in a crowded room.

"When she backs," I said.

"She'll rip the sand off the beaches like a plaster," he said. "Gullrock'll be down to bone."

I didn't hear it, then, for what it was. You never do.

The wind backed nor'west a little after four, the way he'd said, and the roar changed its note, dropped half a tone, went from an animal to a thing bigger and more patient than an animal, and somewhere in that hour the worst of it passed over us and out to sea, and Porthgowan slept where it sat, on flour sacks and benches, in a fug of wet wool and chocolate and yeast, and I slept too, against Sam, against the warm bricks of the oven that had never once in two hundred years gone out.

Word came with the light, the way word always came in Porthgowan — on foot, breathless, at the door.

It was young Rowe, Digory's boy, sent up from the harbour with his eyes like saucers and no coat on. "Gullrock," he got out. "Gullrock's — Miss Meade, the beach is gone, the sand's all gone, and there's a — there's a boat come up in it. An old one. Been under sixty year, my grandad says. And they're saying—" He stopped, and swallowed, and the whole shop had gone still to listen. "They're saying there's a body in her."

Half of Porthgowan was on the cliff path within the hour.

You couldn't keep them off it. Storm or no storm, roof or no roof, when the sea gives something back the whole parish must go and look, it's older than any of us, it's the wrecking blood, though nobody would call it that. I went because I couldn't not, and Kensa went with her phone up, and we trudged out west along the top with the wind still hard enough to lean on and the gulls screaming and everything the colour of pewter and grief. The land was strewn. Wrack thrown up into the hedges, a fish box, a dead gannet, half a hatch cover, a child's welly with no child, God be thanked, anywhere near it. The whole coast turned out like a drowned man's pockets.

And then the cliff fell away and there was Gullrock, and I stopped where I stood, and so did everyone.

The beach was gone. That was the first thing, the thing the boy had said and I hadn't believed. All the deep soft blond sand that made Gullrock a summer beach — gone, scoured down to a black hard floor I'd never seen and nobody living had, a floor of dark rock and dark clay running out flat and glistening under the black stack, with the sea sucking off the far edge of it sullen and spent. And out of that black floor, halfway down where the dunes used to stand, rose the ribs.

That was the only word for them. Ribs. The black timbers of a boat curved up out of the clay in two broken rows, tarred bones of her, thirty foot of keel laid bare and the frames standing off it like the ribcage of some enormous thing the tide had eaten down to the frame. Weed hung off her. She was the colour of the wet rock so that half of looking at her was working out where the beach ended and the wreck began, and once you had her, once your eye caught the shape, you couldn't lose her again, and you understood in your stomach before your head caught up that you were looking at a grave.

The crowd went down the cliff by the cut in a straggling line and gathered at a distance the wreck itself seemed to set, a ring of us thirty feet off her, nobody wanting to be the one to go closer. Petroc Angove was already down, the harbourmaster, in his yellow oilskin, with a length of blue rope he was trying to string on driftwood stakes to keep folk back, and his face when he turned was not a harbourmaster's face. He'd found something. You could see he'd found something and wished to God he hadn't.

I went to the rope because Angove let me, because I'm the one who's found things before, and I looked where he wasn't looking, which is always where the thing is.

In the wreck's timbers, low down, where two frames crossed and held a pocket of clay the sea hadn't yet emptied, something pale showed. Not driftwood pale. Not bone-white, either — nothing on that beach was white — but a smooth curved paleness with the wrong grain to it, a long clean curve going into the dark of the clay and not coming out, and my whole skin went cold in a way the wind hadn't managed all night. I have jointed enough carcasses to know the run of a bone from the run of a stick. That was the round of a shoulder. That was a person, folded down into the timbers of a sixty-year wreck, waiting under the sand of Gullrock the whole of my life and Gran's death and longer.

And near it, snagged in the crook of the same frame, something caught the pewter light and threw it back — a small bright hard-edged glint, dulled and eaten and bright still under the eating, the only made thing in all that ruin of nature. A little flat case, silver once. Angove crouched over it with a freezer bag turned inside out on his hand, and his hand was shaking, this man who's pulled drowned tourists off the rocks and never shook, and he got the case into the bag without touching it and held it up, and grief or no grief the crowd craned to see, and there was engraving on it, worn near to nothing, two capitals in a curl of copperplate under sixty years of the sea.

I was too far to read them. But Sennen Curnow was at the front, seventy-six and folk-memoried to the bone, and I saw her lips move, and I saw her go the colour of the clay.

"Now then." A big voice, warm and grave and made for the front of a room, came over the wind and gathered us all up as neat as a sheepdog. "Now then, my handsomes, come away back off her. She's a war grave near enough, this — some poor soul lost off her when she struck, and we'll treat her with respect, and we'll leave the doing of it to Petroc and the proper folk."

Austol Praed came down the last of the cut with his silver head bare to the weather and his big square hand raised, and the crowd turned to him the way iron filings turn, and settled. Of course he was there. He was always there, first and best, the Commodore, keeper of every wreck and legend on this coast, and he moved into the space in front of the ribs as if he'd been sent for, as if the wreck were his to interpret, and began to interpret it.

"She'll be one of the old luggers," he told us, easy, sure, his hand out toward her like a man showing you round his own house. "Lost in a gale, by the lie of her — driven up on Gullrock and buried where she lay. It happened, in the bad years. Sixty, seventy year back, I'd say, before my time, but I've heard the old tales." He shook his fine head over the sadness of it. "A hard old coast, this was, before the lifeboat. We'll find out her name in the records, and we'll do right by whoever's aboard her, and we'll not—" a look, kind and firm, round the ring of faces "—we'll not go making a ghost-story of a poor drowned sailor for the newspapers. Porthgowan looks after its own."

And it was beautiful, the way he did it. It closed the thing over like water closing over a stone. An old sad wreck, a poor drowned sailor, nothing anyone need lose sleep on. You could feel the crowd take it and be grateful for it. He'd told Porthgowan its own story so many times we'd forgotten we hadn't asked him to.

I might have taken it too. It was a cold morning and I wanted a warm answer.

Except that I turned to find Denzil Nancarrow, because Denzil finds me at these things, he has since I came home, an old man's habit of standing near the one he'll talk to — and Denzil was not being told any story at all.

He stood at the very edge of the crowd, wrapped to the eyes in a muffler Ivy must have wound on him, eighty-six and bent as a thorn tree, and he was looking at the black ribs in the sand and he had gone the grey of a man who has seen the sea open and give up exactly the thing he has spent his whole life praying it would keep. The wind pulled at him. He didn't feel it. His mouth was working.

"Denzil," I said, and went to him, and put my hand under his arm, and he didn't feel that either.

"Came in on the winter boat, she did." He said it to the wreck, or to me, or to nobody — the old refrain, the one he'd been dropping into my hands in pieces for seven years, on the quay, in the churchyard, over a saffron bun, always half-said and never finished, always with his eyes going somewhere else. Came in on the winter boat. The winter she came. The winter of the wrong name in the photograph on Gran's dresser, the name that wasn't Meade. I had spent two and a half years learning not to ask, because asking shut him. So I said nothing, and held his arm, and the wind roared, and the bones lay in the clay.

And it broke on me where I stood — the thing under my feet shifting, the way ground shifts. A wreck of sixty years, they were saying. Sixty years back was the winter of 1961. And 1961 was the winter Gran came in on the boat, under a name that wasn't hers, into a village that had a shame it never named and hung on the Meades. And here was 1961 coming up out of the black floor of Gullrock with a person folded into its ribs and a silver case that made Sennen Curnow go grey, and here was the oldest man in the parish frightened white by it. Behind me, back and up, over my own door on the quay where the driving rain of three nights had stripped the fresh paint to nothing, I knew without seeing it that TREGONING & DAUGHTER was showing through plainer than it had ever shown in my life — the sign beneath my sign, the buried name, storm-scoured up into the light the same as everything else on this coast this morning. Nothing stays sunk. Gran used to say it and I thought it was about lost teaspoons.

I didn't know how. I want to be honest that I didn't, then, know one single how of it. But I knew, standing on that scoured black beach with an old man's arm in my hand, the way you know weather coming — this was Gran's storm. This one had my grandmother's name on it.

Denzil Nancarrow stood at the edge of the crowd with the wind trying to take him and looked at the black ribs in the sand as if they'd risen up and said his name. "Came in on the winter boat," he said, to me, to no one, "and there's them as never forgave the Tregonings for it." And then Austol Praed put a great kind arm round the old man's shoulders and said, "Now then, Denzil, don't go upsetting yourself over old wrecks" — and Denzil shut his mouth like a trap and would not open it again.
