A Hundred Years of Saffron

You can tell a bakehouse's age the way you tell a tree's — not by the paint, which anyone can freshen, but by the smell in the stone. Meade's had a hundred years of saffron in its bones that spring, and I was about to give it a birthday.

I had the threads steeping since five. A fat pinch of them, the good dark Spanish stigmas and not the pale dust that fades to hay by Tuesday, dropped into a jug of milk I'd scalded and set to cool on the sill. The first sun came in low over the harbour and caught the jug, and the whole thing went to molten copper, the colour bleeding up through the milk like a slow tide. Saffron does not hurry. That is the first thing Gran's book teaches you, in among all the things it hides: you cannot rush the gold. You steep it and you wait, and while you wait you learn patience whether you want it or not.

Downstairs, Kensa had the counter open and the first tray of splits already going out, and I could hear her through the floorboards — twenty-one now and running my till and half my ovens as if she'd been born to the flour, telling old Mr Pengelly that no, the hevva cake wasn't out yet, and yes, she'd save him two. Two years ago she'd have said it like a slammed door. Now she said it like family. That was the sound of the whole thing working, if you knew how to listen: a bakehouse that no longer needed me hovering at every proving.

Barnacle sat in the window, vast and one-eared and the colour of overbaked marmalade, watching the gulls with the flat contempt of a landlord watching tenants. He had appointed himself monarch of Meade's the week I took it back, and nothing since — not the tourists, not the environmental health woman, not the time the flour delivery fell on him — had shaken his certainty that the building was his and the rest of us were staff. I scratched the ridge of his skull as I passed with the jug. He permitted it.

The flat above the shop is crooked in every direction, floors that slope toward the harbour as if the house were leaning out to look at the boats, and a window seat where I take my tea and where, that morning, Gran's book lay open to the page I'd been fighting for a month.

I want to be careful how I say what the book is, because it took me the better part of eight seasons to understand it myself.

My grandmother, Loveday Meade, wrote in a hand so small and so private that for a year I'd thought it was simply an old woman's failing eyes. It wasn't. It was a cipher — her own, built out of the three languages she trusted: Cornish dialect words for the things she didn't want a stranger to read, baker's measures that meant one thing on the page and another underneath, and, threaded through all of it, the tides. Half-flood. Springs. Dead low. I'd learned to read her the way you learn a person, slowly and by living beside them, and the reward, page by grudging page, had been the thing steeping in my jug: the lost Tregoning tart.

Saffron, honey, almond. A tart that had gone out of Porthgowan before my father was born and lived on only as a rumour in the mouths of the very old — Ivy Bosworth swore her mother used to weep at the smell of it — and I had been coaxing it back out of Gran's shorthand one line at a time. The crust I had. The almond frangipane I had. The honey I'd argued my way to last autumn. What I did not yet have, wholly, was the headnote — the cramped block of code Gran had written above the recipe, which read to me like a set of directions more than a set of measures, and which I could not for the life of me make into a tart.

I'd give it Saturday, I thought. Whole or not. A hundred years wanted a centrepiece, and this was the one.

Because it wasn't only a tart. That's the other thing.

For sixty years there had been a damp little whisper clinging to Meade's, the kind of thing you hear as a child and don't understand and then spend your adulthood trying to scrub off the walls. That Loveday Meade had come into Porthgowan on the winter boat in 1961 under a name that wasn't hers. That old Grace Tregoning, the last of the Tregoning bakers, had taken the frightened incomer in out of Christian pity — and died soon after, and that the Tregoning inheritance had gone missing the same season, and that Grace's girl, the girl with the borrowed name, had stolen it. That MEADE'S over the door was paint over a theft.

I'd grown up on the far side of that whisper, in a London my father built specifically so it couldn't reach us. He'd fled the name. Never explained it, not once, not on his deathbed. I'd come down to Cornwall two years ago a burnt-out pastry chef with nothing left to lose and no intention of loving anything, and instead I'd found the shop, and the village, and the slow furious wish to know what had actually happened to the woman whose name I carried.

And after what the winter storms turned up — after last year, after the things the sea gave back — I finally knew this much: the accusation had been real, and it had been false. Both. Somebody genuinely had said Loveday stole, out loud, with intent, and made it stick for sixty years. And Loveday genuinely hadn't. I couldn't yet prove the second part to anyone but myself. But I was close. I could feel it the way you feel an oven come up to heat through the soles of your feet — a change in the whole building.

Which was why Edith Nankivell was in Porthgowan.

I'd hired her in February, a retired probate genealogist with a gentle voice and a way of saying the records will tell us that made me trust her on the spot. She'd been tracing the Tregoning estate through the county paperwork — who owned what, when, and how it had passed — and she was thorough in a way I found almost restful. She telephoned every few days with small careful updates and never, ever overstated what she'd found. I don't like to say until I'm sure, she'd tell me. You post the copy, you keep the copy, you check the copy. That's the whole trade. She'd said something like it three times now. It was the sort of habit you noticed in a person and filed away as harmless.

She was due back with real progress. She'd hinted, last call, that the estate had passed in a way she wanted to look at twice before she'd put words to it, and I'd learned by then not to push her. She'd tell me when she was sure. That was Edith.

I carried the saffron down at half seven, the jug glowing in my two hands like something you'd smuggle over a border, and the bakehouse hit me the way it does — the cloam oven breathing in the back wall, that great domed brick mouth Gran had fed and I fed after her, wood-fired, alive, throwing its dry heat across the whole room. I'd learned that oven the hard way, learned its every mood, learned to read the char at the back and the colour of the flame and the exact minute the crust would take. I could tell you, blind, how hot it was and how long it had been that hot. Fire and I have an understanding. I keep it fed and inside its walls, and it does what I say.

"Saffron's up," I told Kensa, setting the jug where she could see it and not touch it.

"That the tart?" She leaned over it, breathing in, and her whole surly-teenager face went soft the way it only did over something coming right. "God, that's — that's Christmas and church and being little, all at once."

"That's Cornwall," I said. "That's a hundred years of it."

"You cracked the top bit yet? The scribble?"

"No." I looked at the window, at the harbour beyond it, the boats sitting freshly painted at their moorings — blue and red and that particular hopeful white people give a boat in spring — and the gorse burning gold along the headland behind them, and the whole cove smelling of salt and new paint and, from us, of saffron. "Give me till Saturday."

The door went, the little bell over it that Gran had hung, and the morning walked in wearing a good tweed jacket and a smile you could have warmed your hands at.

"There she is," Nat Treloar said, "the hardest-working woman in Porthgowan," and the shop, as it always did, brightened by about ten per cent simply because he'd come into it.

I want to be fair to him, since I've the whole rest of this to be otherwise. Nathaniel Treloar was, that spring morning, the most loved man in the village, and he'd earned it the slow way, over decades. Churchwarden at St Gowan's. Chair of the harbour committee and, this year, of the centenary committee, which meant he'd taken it upon himself to make my shop's birthday into the village's. Fifty-four, silvering handsomely, the sort of man who remembered your dead and asked after your living and turned up at the lifeboat fund and the school fete and the funeral of every soul who'd ever bought a pasty on the quay. When the roof of the church hall went last winter it was Treloar money that mended it, quietly, before anyone had to ask. He was gentle and generous and he had never in my two years been anything but kind to me.

"Nat," I said. "You're early. We're not open to committee till nine."

"I'm not here as committee." He set a hand flat over his heart, mock-wounded, and helped himself to the corner of a warm split without asking, which he was allowed. "I'm here as a man who could smell that from the quay and had to know what it was." He tasted it, closed his eyes. "Saffron. You're doing the old tart."

"Trying to."

"The lost one. Loveday's." He said her name gently, the way you'd handle something old. He always did. He'd taken what he called a fond interest in the history the moment he'd heard I was digging into it — turned up at the archive open day, lent the committee a box of his grandfather's papers for the exhibition, asked after my genealogist by name. "And how is Miss Nankivell getting on? Is the cottage comfortable? I did tell her, anything she wants, she's only to knock at mine."

"You'd have to ask her. She's comfortable enough to complain about the wifi, which I take to be a good sign."

He laughed, delighted. It had been Nat who'd sorted Edith's lodging, back in February — swept in when I'd been fretting about where to put her, and said don't be silly, Robyn, I've the net-loft let standing empty at the Quay Head, she's welcome to it and glad of the company for it, the sea air'll do her good. One of his. The Treloars held the whole run of old net-lofts and warehouses along the harbour front, the Quay Head block, and one of them had been done up into a holiday cottage, and it had seemed to me then the plainest kindness in the world. A great man of the village housing my researcher out of the goodness of his heart, and taking an interest besides. I'd been grateful.

I filed it, that morning, under nothing at all.

"You know," Nat said, more comfortably, wandering the shop with his half-eaten split, touching the old scarred counter with something like affection, "my grandfather knew this place when it was still Tregoning's. Before your gran's time, even. He always said it was the finest granite on the quay." He tipped his head back to look up at the beam over the door, where in a low sun — and the sun that morning was exactly low enough — you could still read the ghost of the older name coming through the paint. MEADE'S, and beneath it, faint as a scar, TREGONING & DAUGHTER. "Wonderful, isn't it," he said. "The old name showing through. I do hope you'll leave it."

"I couldn't paint it out if I tried," I said. "It comes back every spring."

There was the smallest pause. Then he smiled again, and it was warm again, and I thought I'd imagined the pause.

The bell went a second time and the morning's warmth dropped by those same ten per cent, because the second man through my door was Marcus Doble, and Marcus Doble came into a room the way weather comes into a harbour.

"Treloar," he said, not to me. Bristol in his vowels and a phone already in his hand. "You're a hard man to pin. My office has left three messages about the completion pack."

"Mr Doble." Nat's voice didn't change at all, and that in itself was interesting, if I'd been paying the right kind of attention. "You've met Robyn Meade. Whose centenary you'll be helping us celebrate on Saturday."

Doble gave me the two-second glance he gave anything he couldn't buy. "The bakery." I existed to him as a fixture, and not one he rated. He was the developer — I'd had the shape of it for weeks, the way you get the shape of a storm off the radio — the man buying the whole Quay Head freehold off the Treloars for a marina-and-lettings scheme that would put a wine bar where the net men used to mend their gear. A fortune, people said. The ground under the whole harbour front. Which included, when you traced it down through the deeds, the ground under my own two feet — the freehold beneath Meade's, held by the Treloars since before Gran, that I paid a small strange tenancy on and had never once, in two years, managed to get anyone to explain properly.

"Saturday," Doble said. "Right. Well. Congratulations." And to Nat, low, already turning: "The pack, Nathaniel. This week. I've got surveyors idle and a bank asking questions." He was gone before Nat answered, the bell swinging.

For a moment nobody said anything. Kensa raised her eyebrows at me over the till. Barnacle had come off the windowsill and stood, tail lashing once, watching the closed door as though it had personally offended him.

"He means well," Nat said, which was such a whole and generous lie that I nearly laughed. "It's a great deal of money for the village, Robyn. Moorings mended, the front done up. Nobody wants change, and everybody wants the money change brings. That's the whole trouble with being fifty-four — you remember when the harbour couldn't pay its own light bill." He set the last of the split down, and for just a second the warmth went out of his face and something older sat in it, tired and calculating and afraid, and then the sun came round and it was gone and I told myself it was the light.

I let all of it go. Every bit. That is the part I've had two years and a fire to forgive myself for.

I took the empty tray out through the yard, past the low flour store, to knock the ash out, and Sam was at the rail of the boatyard next door with a plank across two trestles and a plane in his hand, and the sight of him did what it had done for a year now and I'd stopped fighting: it settled me, root and branch, the way a good loaf settles when you've got the hydration right.

"Centenary man's in with you," he said, not looking up, the plane hissing off a curl of pale wood.

"Everyone's in with me. It's Wednesday."

"Doble too. Saw the car." Now he did look up, and the look went on a beat past what the words needed. Sam Trerise, coxswain of the lifeboat, boatbuilder, the steadiest thing on the quay, and mine — mine in the quiet unspoken way we'd been circling for two years and never quite put into a sentence. "You alright, maid?"

"I'm grand," I said, and meant it, standing there between his boatyard and my bakehouse with the ash pail in my hand and the gorse gold on the hill and a hundred years of saffron behind me. Two buildings, side by side, on the same old quay. A boatyard and a bakehouse. It was the closest either of us had come to saying the thing, and we both heard it and neither of us said it, and he went back to his plane and I stood a moment longer than I needed to.

"Saturday," I said. "You'll come."

"I'll be there." Beat. "Robyn." Beat. "I'm always going to be there." And he planed off another curl and let me take that away with me, which I did, all day, like a warm stone in a pocket.

Edith would telephone that night. She'd said she would — that she'd have something, at last, that she was nearly sure, and that she'd rather tell me in person, tomorrow, once she'd checked the copy one more time. I'd said fine, tomorrow, and gone back to my saffron and thought about the tart, and about my grandmother's small frightened cipher, and about how close I was.

I was one witness from clearing her. I didn't know that yet. I thought I had all the time in the world and a birthday to bake.

Nat came to find me before he left, out in the yard, and took my floury hand in both of his — his were soft and warm and dry — and there was nothing in his face but the whole village's fondness, and the gold morning behind him, and the smell of saffron on the wind off the shop.

"A hundred years," Nat Treloar said warmly, pressing my floury hand in both of his, "and never a shop more loved. Whatever you need for Saturday, Robyn — whatever it costs — you come to me." He beamed at the whole gold morning as if he owned it. In a manner of speaking, I would learn, he did.

The Recipe That Wasn't a Recipe

My grandmother wrote her whole self in code and then hid it in a recipe, which tells you two things about Loveday Meade: she was frightened, and she trusted a baker to find her. I had spent eight seasons proving her right.

The commonplace-book lived in a tin on the flour-store shelf, where I could reach it with floury hands between bakes and where nobody who didn't know to look would ever think to. It was a small fat thing, oilcloth covers gone soft as chamois, the spine held with a bootlace because the stitching had let go some decade I never met. Loveday had filled it front to back in a hand so neat it looked printed until you tried to read it, and then it swam — because it wasn't English, quite, and it wasn't Cornish, quite, and it wasn't numbers you could add. It was all three at once, folded together, salted with dialect and baker's shorthand and, running under everything like a tide beneath a boat, the tides themselves. Springs and neaps. Dead low. The flood come in over Barnacle's foot. She measured time the way the harbour measured it, and for eight years I had been learning to measure it that way too.

I had the tools of her out on the table that morning, before the exhibition, before any of it. The book, open at a page I'd nearly beaten. The little brass key on its loop of tarry twine — three inches of it, worn bright at the bow, cut for a lock I had never in two years found in this building or any other, and I had looked; God, I had looked. The photograph, foxed at its corners, of a girl of perhaps nineteen standing under the shop sign with her chin up and her hands folded in front of her apron like a woman braced for a blow. TREGONING & DAUGHTER, said the sign above her, the letters proud and deep. She did not look like a daughter of anyone. She looked like someone who had arrived. And on the flyleaf, in that same swimming hand, the line I had read so many times it had worn a groove in me: For whoever proves true. — L.

I set the kettle on and I got to work, because the last locked pages of that book were the recipe, and the recipe was the whole ballgame.

It was the lost one. The Tregoning tart — saffron, honey and almond, the one Grace Tregoning gave my grandmother in that hard winter of 1961 and my grandmother never once, in fifty years of baking for this village, put in her window. That fact alone had haunted me since Book — since the winter storms, I mean, since the year the sea gave up the first of it. You don't hide a recipe you're proud of. You hide a recipe that is also something else.

I steeped the saffron first, out of habit and hope both — a good pinch of it in three tablespoons of warm milk, and it bled its gold out slow, the way it always does, turning the milk the colour of a low sun through cloud. While it steeped I worked the page. The headnote first, which any baker would read as method and which I now read as Loveday had written it: Take of the true gold what you may spare, and no more; wake it in the small warmth, not the great. Fair enough as saffron goes — you bloom it gently or you scorch it. But the true gold she'd written with a capital, and Loveday capitalised nothing by accident. And there in the margin, in the baker's shorthand I'd cracked three summers back — 3 pt fr. hearth, dead low, spring — which was not a quantity of anything you could sift. Three of something from the hearth, at dead low water, on a spring tide.

Three what? I chewed my pencil and I watched the saffron steep and I did not, that morning, get it. That's the honest shape of it, and I'm setting it down honestly because it matters later that I was close and blind at once, the way you can be standing in your own kitchen. I got the tart, though. I got the tart entire that morning, the first person to hold the whole of it in a hundred years — saffron and honey and ground almond and a short sweet paste and a lattice, and a trick with orange-flower water in the last of it that made me laugh out loud alone in my kitchen because it was so good, because she had been so good. I wrote it out clean on a card. I did not yet know I was holding a map. But I knew I was holding her hand, and that was enough to be going on with, and I went up the quay to the church hall with saffron under my nails and my grandmother in my chest.

They had done the old hall proud.

Rev. Hester Quick and half the WI had been at it three days, and St Gowan's church hall — which for eleven months of the year smelled of tea urn and hymn-book and damp hassock — smelled that week of beeswax and cut flowers and the particular dust of very old paper let out into the light. A HUNDRED YEARS ON THE QUAY, said the banner over the door, hand-lettered, the paint not quite dry on the second N. Trestle tables ran the length of it under white cloths. Photographs stood in ranks on easels and boards: the quay when the pilchard boats still packed it gunwale to gunwale; the bakehouse with a horse and cart outside it and men in caps; my grandmother, older, in the doorway with a tray, squinting into somebody's Box Brownie. And, at the centre of the long table, behind glass, on loan and under a hand-inked card — The Tregoning Ledgers, by kind permission — the great leather account-books of the shop that had been here before mine, before Meade's, when the sign said the other thing.

The whole room told the story of the shop. Not one board of it told the story of the woman written out of the shop, and I stood a moment in the door feeling that absence the way you feel a cold draught and can't find the window.

"It's the fire regulations, before you ask," said a voice at my elbow, dry and warm and not local, "and I have already lost."

She was small and neat and past sixty, in a good grey cardigan with a pencil through the bun of her hair and a second pencil behind her ear, which I would learn was Edith Nankivell entire — she was a woman who never had only one of anything. She had a cataloguing card in one hand and a pair of half-glasses pushed up on her forehead, and she was frowning, kindly, at a branch of candlesticks the WI had set along the windowsills for Saturday's evening opening.

"Lost how?" I said.

"I asked Hester to take the candles out and she looked at me as if I'd asked to cancel Christmas." Edith tucked the card into a little concertina wallet, and I noticed she wrote the same reference twice, once on the card and once in a slim notebook, before she filed either. "I don't care for open flame. Never have. There was a fire in my mother's house when I was small — I got out, everyone got out, but I have never since been easy in a room with a naked light in it. Silly, at my age." She said it lightly, the way people say the true frightening things. "At the cottage I've unplugged the little wood-burner and I use the electric heater and I have told the harbourmaster twice, so nobody thinks I'm freezing to death out of thrift."

"You're the genealogist," I said. "Edith. I'm—"

"I know exactly who you are." She put out her hand and took mine in a grip like a much larger woman's. "You're the reason I'm here, Robyn Meade, and you've got saffron under your nails, and I've wanted to shake your hand since your first letter." Her eyes were very bright and very steady. "My mother was St Gowan's parish, did they tell you? Chynoweth before she married out. Born not four doors from where your shop stands. So when you wrote to me about a woman who'd had her name taken off her, it wasn't a job I took. It was a thing I wanted." She lowered her voice, not to hide it but to hold it. "I've spent forty years giving the dead their names back off parish registers and probate rolls. Most of them nobody living remembers. Yours, somebody remembers. That's the good kind of work."

I liked her at once and completely, and I have learned to trust that in myself; my palate for people is as sound as my palate for anything.

She walked me down the tables. She had catalogued the whole exhibition in two days, every photograph, every borrowed object, and where a card was hers you could tell, because there were two of everything — a fair copy pinned up for the public and, in her wallet, a carbon of it in that firm small hand. "Never keep the one and only," she said, when she caught me watching her copy out a caption she'd already written. "Forty years of watching families lose the one document that mattered because Great-Aunt So-and-So had it in her handbag when the handbag went in the harbour. I post duplicates up-country, to my sister. I photograph everything. If it exists once, it doesn't exist." She said it like a proverb, which I suppose in her trade it was. "If it exists twice, it's beginning to be safe."

We came to the ledgers under their glass. She stopped there and went quiet in a different way.

"These," she said, "are why I need another day."

The web of the room, meanwhile, was drawing tight around us, and I felt it without yet knowing to be afraid of it.

Nat Treloar had done all this, in the way Nat did everything — genially, generously, with his name on none of it and his hand under all of it. It was Treloar money that had insured the ledgers for their loan and Treloar charm that had got them out of the county archive at all; there was a little card by the door, The Centenary Exhibition, made possible by the Treloar Trust, and half the village had already thanked him for it and would thank him again on Saturday. He wasn't there that morning. He didn't need to be. He was there the way the roof was there.

Marcus Doble was there, though, and he did not belong to the room and knew it and didn't care. A big brisk Bristol man in a coat that cost more than my ovens, he prowled the boards with his phone in his hand and his patience visibly leaking, pausing at the photographs of the Quay Head net-lofts — the run of old buildings beside my shop, the ones he wanted, the ones with the holiday let in the end of them where a small frightened woman was even now sleeping with the wood-burner unplugged. He looked at those photographs the way a man looks at a thing he's already bought and is annoyed to find still furnished.

"Interesting," he said to no one, to me, when he found me at the ledgers. "All this history. You'd think a place would be glad to move on." He nodded at the glass. "Old books. Who even knows if the half of it's true."

"The people who wrote it knew," said Edith, mildly, not looking up.

Doble looked at her the way you look at a wasp near a child, and moved off.

And there was Petroc Angove, the harbourmaster, hovering — that's the only word — near the door, in and out of it, come to be seen supporting the village and staying to fret. He got me by the sleeve on my way to fetch Edith a cup of tea. "You want to have a word with your researcher," he said, low, the brass buttons of him gleaming with anxiety. "Stirring up old titles, asking down the records office who held what and when. There's a grant riding on this quarter, Robyn, there's money for the whole harbour riding on nobody making a fuss about who owns the ground under the—" He stopped. "It's a bad week to be raking cold ashes, is all I'm saying."

"She's tracing my grandmother's story, Petroc."

"Aye, well." He looked away, out at the water, ashamed and stubborn both. "Some stories are better left where they lie."

And at the far edge of it, past the last easel, near the tea urn where the WI ladies had contrived not to offer her a cup, stood Demelza Treloar. Nat's cousin — the family's cracked bell, the one the village remembered only for the worst of her years. Nobody had invited her and nobody could say the parish hall wasn't public. She stood with her arms folded and a hard clean watchfulness on her, and she was not looking at the photographs. She was looking at Edith, and she was looking at the ledgers under the glass, and there was something in her face I'd have called hunger in a hungrier-looking woman. When she caught me seeing her, she didn't look away, which the guilty do and the truly angry don't. She held it a beat, and then she went out into the sun without a word, and the WI ladies breathed again.

I brought Edith her tea. She had her half-glasses down now and one hand flat on the glass over the ledgers, as if she could read them through the case by touch.

"What doesn't add up?" I said.

She was a long moment answering. When she did, she chose the words the way she filed her cards, one at a time, nothing extra. "The village tells it that the Tregoning inheritance went missing," she said, "and that your grandmother — Grace's girl, the incomer — was the last to have the keeping of it, and draw your own conclusions, which the village did, for sixty years." She tapped the glass, once. "But money doesn't go missing, Robyn. That's the great secret of my whole trade. Money moves. Somebody signs it somewhere. And in these" — the ledgers, the old solicitor's careful columns — "there's a place where the village's story says missing and the paper says moved. Moved by a hand that had no right to move it, and covered over by the same hand, and I can nearly — nearly — read whose." She took her hand off the glass. "I need one more day to be sure I'm not seeing what I want to see. I've been at this too long to hang a dead woman's good name on a nearly. But it doesn't add up the way they tell it. It adds up the other way entirely."

The room went on around us, beeswax and old paper and the low tide of village talk, and I stood there with a cup of cooling tea I didn't remember pouring, and something in my chest that I had carried folded small for two years began, very carefully, to unfold.

She telephoned that evening, just gone nine.

I was up in the flat with the recipe card propped against the sugar jar and Barnacle a hot weight across my feet on the window seat, the whole harbour gone violet below and the boats knocking gently at their moorings, and the phone rang and it was her, and I knew from the first word.

"Robyn." Just my name, and under it a lift, a held-down joy, the sound of a careful woman letting herself be glad. "I've got it."

I sat up so fast the cat swore at me. "Edith—"

"I've got the thing that clears your grandmother." She said it plainly, giving me the whole of it, no cruelty of teasing in her. "I went back to the records office this afternoon and I found the last of it, and it's not a nearly any more, my love. It's a this is what happened and here is the paper that says so. Your Loveday never stole anything. Somebody stole from her, and from another before her, and dressed it up in her name because she was new and frightened and couldn't fight back." A crackle came down the line, the old exchange, the wire under the harbour. "I won't say more than that tonight."

"Edith, please—"

"No." Kind and iron both. "Not down a telephone. I've learned to be careful, in my work — you'd be amazed what travels on a village line, and this touches people who are still very much alive and very much respected, and I'll not say a name into the dark where I can't see whose face it lands on." A pause. "I want to lay it in front of you properly. In order. Every document, so you see the chain of it and can't be argued out of it, and neither can anyone else. After your centenary — I'll not crowd your hundred years with a thing sixty years old. Come to the cottage when the bunting's down, and I'll have the whole of it out on the table."

"I'll bring the tart," I said, half-laughing, half-something else. "I finished it this morning. The lost one. Saffron and honey and almond, the way Grace made it — the way she never let herself make it."

There was a silence down the line then, and when Edith spoke again her voice had changed. "Then we'll have Grace's tart," she said softly, "over Grace's truth. That's fitting. That's exactly right." I heard her draw breath. "I'll show you all of it once your hundred years is behind us, my love — everything, in order, the way it truly happened," Edith said, warm and sure down the crackling line. "Only let me get my copies in the post first. I never keep the one and only." I said goodnight and slept like a woman with nothing to grieve — the smoke still two nights off.
