Fifteen-year-old Etta Tilghman can bring a dead outboard motor back to life in the cold September dark, but she can't say three words in class without her throat closing. She's the girl who fixes things quietly — the loose porch railing, the seized flywheel, the forged permission slip her little brother will never know wasn't real. Every repair she does in secret feeds a coffee can of hidden cash, and that can is the only thing standing between her family and the second notice taped to the fridge. Her plan is simple: stay invisible, keep the house off the market, survive.

Then a chaotic freshman with a camera and zero sense of self-preservation drags her into resurrecting Cutter Bay High's dead robotics club to chase the prize money at a regional underwater-robotics challenge.
