The Story

Julia’s quiet life changes when she inherits over $20,000 from an obscure uncle. Intending to leave her small-town book store job and shop for a husband in Los Angeles, she discovers she can phase her hands through solid wooden doors using sheer willpower. Soon after, a telepathic voice speaks to her: Walt, a man living aboard an orbiting alien space station who believes himself to be a native of "Lyria." Walt, along with other stolen human children, has been raised under the strict control of coward aliens led by Forential. The aliens have secretly altered the humans' brains to form a neural "bridge," granting them telepathy, teleportation, and invisibility to use as weapons in an impending Earth invasion.

Walt is sent down to Earth in a saucer ship to hunt and kill Julia, whom the aliens fear because her power awakened independently. Conditioned to view Earthlings with hostile hatred and convinced there is a war on, Walt pursues her through Southern California. Julia, instantly deciding Walt is her ideal husband despite his violent intent, relies on her wits and newly unlocked abilities to stay alive. During a high-speed chase north toward San Francisco, Walt wrecks his car; Julia rescues him from a burning vehicle and takes him to a hospital, using his existence as her sole proof of the alien plot.
