OWL HOUR

Season One — The Keeper of Lost Things

by Rin Castellano

109 pages30,077 wordsFictionAges 13 and up

Some cities bury their rivers. Tōmizu buried its grief along with them — and grief, like water, always finds a way back up.

Fifteen-year-old Suzu Mikage has spent three years perfecting the art of not looking. Headphones cranked, eyes down, boring on purpose, because boring is camouflage. It has to be. Ever since her mother walked out into the rain and never came home, Suzu has been pretending the dead aren't there — even though her pale right eye sees them everywhere. In a neon megacity built over a drowned river, nothing thrown away ever truly vanishes. Demolished noodle stands, evicted homes, forgotten people — all of it curdles into yokai with nowhere to go, each one tethered to Suzu by a single steam-thin thread only she can see.

Then a haunting drags her off the map, down a lane that wasn't there this morning, to a tea-shop that opens only at dusk to serve the lost: Fukurō-doki, the Owl Hour. Its half-blind master doesn't slay spirits. He brews them the one tea that finally lets them rest. But when his eyes fall on the brass bell hanging from Suzu's bag, he goes pale. It was her mother's. And her mother, it turns out, is the reason he closed the shop.

Meanwhile a ruthless cleansing firm is severing spirits to clear ground for one last demolition. The buried river is rising. And somewhere at the bottom, in the dark the old folks call the Underrun, something speaks in a voice Suzu knows too well.

The Keeper of Lost Things is a gorgeously drawn urban fantasy for readers who love tender monsters, aching cities, and stories about the things — and people — we can't quite let go. Melancholy and warm, eerie and human, it treats every ghost as a person who was loved once, and forgotten too soon.

Open the door at dusk. Season One begins now.
