The Held Water

A Ghost Story Below the City

by Marlow Greaves

181 pages49,859 wordsFictionAges 18 and up

Some water is never meant to be lit. Some water is never meant to be drained.

Beneath the city of Ferrishaw lies the Deepholt — a vast Victorian cistern of black brick and colder dark, sunk in 1869 and left to keep what the world above could not bear to hold. The dead. The shamed. The drowned. The things too dangerous to burn or bury. The water does not rot. It does not move. It does not forget. And in six days, the engineers mean to pump it dry.

They need one diver who knows the chamber. There is only Edie Crale — because twelve years ago she tended the line the day her mentor descended toward the sump and never came back up. No body. No answer. Only a report half-drowned in redaction ink and two clean words left standing: ruled entrapment.

Now Edie goes down alone into the lightless cold to map the dark before it empties. Down past the working level, past the rank on rank of iron columns standing in their own still reflections, toward the Low Water where everything the city couldn't keep on its shelf has gone to settle. And in the black, she finds the woman she lost — unchanged, calm, and waiting.

She finds the bargain Ferrishaw has honoured since 1869. Feed the dark, and it holds the line. Drain it, and a century of held things comes straining toward the air.

With the clock running and the water listening, Edie must decide what she is truly willing to give — and what the ending of this keeping will cost.

The Held Water is a slow-burn descent into grief, patience, and drowning dark, told in a voice as spare and cold as brick that has never once been warm. A ghost story about the price of letting go, and the terrible mercy of bringing someone home to rot in the sun.

Go down into the Deepholt. Just be sure you can come back up.
