Some houses keep old laws, and some old laws keep something out. At Fenn's Hollow, a lonely smallholding on the edge of Galemoor, rowan hangs above the byre door, salt lines every windowsill, and a white saucer waits on the outer ledge for whatever comes in the dark. Mhairi Tace doesn't understand the old ways yet. She only knows she has come here hollowed by grief, her marriage worn to thread, her six-year-old son Tom the one bright thing she has left. Then the mist comes up off the hill, thick and white and wrong, and Tom wanders to the ancient barrow above the house. He is gone a single night. By morning he walks home unharmed — and something in Mhairi goes cold at the sight of him. The boy who returns is too still, too clever, too knowing. He sings a rhyme no one ever taught him. He watches her with her son's eyes and something else behind them.

The doctor calls it grief. Her husband calls it exhaustion. The village calls it a mother's broken mind. Only Mhairi knows the truth: something came down off the moor wearing her child's face, and it means to stay. To take her real son back, she must learn what the sweetening truly buys, what the boundary stone truly costs, and how far a mother will go into the dark to undo the unthinkable.
