Carrowmere
A Gothic Horror of the Snowbound Sanatorium
by Lydia Vass
The road closes when the snow means it. That is the whole point of Carrowmere.
High in the frozen hills stands a great pale house that has been given a new name and a fresh coat of gilt paint. But scratch the surface—quite literally, where a proud new board hangs an inch off the stone—and an older word waits beneath: the sanatorium this place used to be, where the consumptive and the dying came up half dead to lie still and let the mountain do its work. Some of them got well. Some of them are still here.
Nora Fairbank has come to caretake through the winter with her husband, to breathe the good cold air and forget the griefs she carries in her chest and her heart. Three house rules keep the place in order. Rest between two and four, when the old pipes knock and the radiators go quiet. Stay out of the shuttered east wing. And keep off the black tarn below, the water that never freezes, whose ice is a liar end to end.
They are simple rules. They are also warnings.
As the blizzard buries the only track and the telephone dies on the wall, Nora begins to notice what the house wants noticed—doors that open on rooms that should not exist, a woman glimpsed where no woman should be, and an old black ledger whose names never seem to leave. One by one, the certainties she arrived with begin to slip. And Carrowmere, patient as snow, sets about peeling her open to see what lies beneath.
Lydia Vass writes gothic horror the old, slow, merciless way: dread that gathers like weather, prose as fine and cold as frost on glass, and a mounting terror that the sickness in these walls was never of the body at all.
Lock the doors. Turn the page. And ask yourself whether anyone who enters Carrowmere is ever truly meant to leave.
